[OT] Shared network files

Two things that have worked for me in the past.

1) Try to rename the file. If you can, then reboot the computer and try to
delete it.
2) Copy another file to that directory. Select all the files at once and
try to delete them. I have noticed that with some files, Explorer tries to
read them to display the files contents in the left pain. This locks the
file. By selecting more then one file, this doesn't happen. I often run
into this with large or corrupted tiff files.

Just a thought,

There is a program called moveonboot that can move or delete files the
next time the PC or Server is rebooted. This is the easiest most
painless way to get rid of these pesky files.

I've had a few instances where an AutoCAD file wasn't "open-able" or
"delete-able" even though no one was using the file. Three of the files
were restored from a backup and I've never been able to delete them from
the
server location that I temporarily restored them to. Rebooting did
nothing.
The fourth was a file copied to another PC that couldn't be opened until
both PCs were rebooted.

I'd love to delete these three files (along with the series of
directories
holding them),

Anyone?

We're having trouble with certain shared excel files on the network.
The
file has full access because various users need to modify the file.
But
often, when a user goes to open the file, it says that the file is in
use.
After triple-checking that noone has the file open, it still says the
file
is in use. Inevitably, someone who previously had the file opened has
to
reboot their computer to free up the file.

Any idea why certain computers are not releasing the file for others
to
open/view/edit?

Troy,

We also have many shared excel files. We have Office 2000. Go under Tools, Share Workbook. This will show you who has it open and enable you to disconnect them. Also, take a look at whether your "workbook" is protected or not. I had to protect our spreadsheets to make them work correctly while being shared. I'm really not sure why........

We have a mixture of Office 97 and Office 2000 and Office XP. Is that a
problem here? I believe the original file was created in Office 97. Does
having it saved in Office 2000 for example, and doing what you suggest, will
that be a problem for Office 97 users?

You can always release the file using Net File or a VB script. The
file will have an ID number. Net File IDNum /close will make it
available again. The real trick is finding the ID number of the
file. Net File doesn't work with file names. If I can find the
script I wrote I will post it.

We use to have 97 and 2000 at the same time. Only every once in a while did it create a problem. Sometimes the 97 users were not able to open the 2000 files. But, that didn't happen very often.

I noticed that I had to save my spreadsheet and then click on an empty/blank cell on the worksheet before the "share workbook" option ungrayed. Under Tools, there should be a listing that says "Protection". Then under "Protection" there should be a listing that says, "Protect and Share Worksheet". The spreadsheet did allow me to "share workbook" before I protected it. See if clicking on a blank area allows you to click on the "share workbook" option.

Wendy,
I checked with a user who has the proper permissions, and they had
access to the "share workbook" option. We also selected the "Protect and
Share Worksheet" option. We'll see if that clears things up.

Thanks.

This is an after hours thing. Log in on the server as the local
administrator and you should be able to take ownership of the folder/files.
Once you have that you should be able to whack them.
