OT: Shutting down server in the event of a power failure

I just checked a poweredge 350 and in the bios under Boot there is an option
for What to do after a power failure and "turn on" is the option I have.
you may want to double check. I have a 1650 and I'll check it later for
you. However, and this is just a thought....do you have your UPS gracefully
shutting down the server (ie a serial cable to power down when the battery
fails?) Perhaps the system doesn't think it is a power failure but just a
shutdown and therefore doesn't turn itself back on. Like I said I may be
all wet because I've never had to test it. I'll let you know if my other
Dell has the same Bios.

Good luck.

failure

Well got a good one for you
We have a Brand spanking new DELL 2600 Power Edge Server
It is attached to a Tripplite SU2200 100VA Battery Backup unit
I am running Windows 2003 Server
Latest version of Power alert software

We had a power outage this weekend. (First time since putting in the new
server)
The server did not come back online when the power was restored
The old Vantage server did (HP LH3000)

Called Tripplite
They said its a Dell issue as all my settings were correct
Said there is a BIOS Setting that tells the system what state to return to
in the event of a power outage

REbooted the server over lunch today
No Setting
Called Dell
No setting available in BIOS/CMOS for this
This is a software issue
Their recommendation, call Tripplite!

Called Tripplite - They say Dell is nuts and that if there is no setting
in
CMOS for this then I am S O L

Anyone have a solution for me?

The power management built into Windows 2003 only lists a APC Unit and I
searched Microsoft's website for a drive without any luck!

Thanks

I wish I could help you Jim, but haven't had that happen yet (fingers
crossed). But it sure sounds like the typical support dialog
(finger-pointing on both sides). I booted a test server (not Dell) -
couldn't find anything that resembled it.

I have run into issues in the past with Dell BIOS - they customize it to the point that it looks nice, but works strangely. Many features are not available that other manufacturers servers (IBM, Gateway, & HP) have. Is your server's firmware up to the latest revision ? It might be possible to add some custom logic that "turns on" your server when both the commerical and UPS voltages come back. Is the HP plugged into the same UPS or is it on it's own of the same type as the Dell ? Also, there is a "undocumented" BIOS key sequence for resetting the BIOS to factory defaults on Dell desktops - I don't know if it applies to servers - I believe it's ALT-F or ALT-R. I needed to use that on a desktop where the BIOS "looked" perfect, but the system wasn't behaving right.

I would suggest a simple controlled experiment using the Tripp Lite and a computer that does have the BIOS feature enabled.
Connect them up - power them up - pull the ups plug from the wall and wait for the pc to shut down (using the Tripp lite s/w). Then plug the UPS back into the wall and see what happens. I would also do it a second time where the UPS battery is allowed to drain all the way down, before the UPS is plugged back into the wall. At least that will fully test the UPS logic. It is possible that both Tripp Lite and Dell's equipment is not working the way they should.
