Ot: disaster recovery

This is true, but most of the folks that I've run across are still running
Windows NT Server v4. I guess that I should have better specified that in
my scenario. This capability is even better in the Windows .NET server beta
that I've been toying with.

Maybe you should get back to work now Jeremy!

I agree but normally with Windows 2000 Server you can do a restore to
different hardware. There is a complete set of instructions on both CA and
Microsoft's web site on how to do this. Drive configuration is more
important and this can easily be worked around.

Without purchasing another server, you can't really minimize downtime. The
type of scenario you list here would be OK for a hard drive that went bad,
but what if your motherboard fried? Normally in disaster recovery, you
should imagine the worst case scenario and work your way up from there.
Imagine that they complete server is gone and all that you are left with is
your offsite backup tape. You should also look at single points of failure.
Motherboard, memory, CPU, etc. You can work with vendors to help supply you
with a computer quickly, but this still takes time and in order for you to
do a install from DOS type backup you normally need to have the exact same
hardware in your new computer as you had in your old computer.

Sometimes it helps to let management know what is going to happen in the
event of a complete server meltdown. You can adjust these numbers
accordingly.

Server motherboard fries at 8:00 am

Diagnose that server is completely dead - 2 hrs - 10:00 am

Call support for new server motherboard (if you purchased rapid response) -
4 hrs - 2:00 pm

New motherboard installed and server working again - 2 hrs - 4:00 pm

As you can see this is extremely optimistic about getting it diagnosed and
restored. It normally works this way:

Server motherboard fries at 8:00 am

Diagnose that server is completely dead - 2 hrs - 10:00 am

Server vendor ships new motherboard for early AM arrival - 24hrs -10:00 am
next day

New motherboard installed and server working again - 2 hrs - 12:00 pm next
day

Neither of these scenarios counts on your server having hard disk corruption
or issues with RAID. Those will make this time much longer.

Don't mean to scare you but I hope that this helps,

We use Arceserve from Computer Associates. It requires that you take the
server down to do the first backup. You basically boot to a disk created by
Arceserve and perform a full backup to tape media. Then you do your backups
as normal. In the event of a crash, you boot to the same disk, restore your
full backup and then boot to windows. Then you restore your latest backup.
It seems easy enough and I have verified that it works. If we perform any
major upgrades then we update the first full backup.
Thanks
