OT-Teminal Server

I had Epicor quote for them to come out over a weekend and do the
full upgrade including a dump and load and upgrades from 5.0...6.1,
therefore they will know for sure what is supported and will be able
to resolve any problem which I would not have support for. I did
3.0,4.0,5.0 over a 3day Labor day weekend a few years ago and I just
know I can't make this one happen in 2 days with everything else
going on. Of course all of the server hardware will be in place
before Vantage upgrade. I hope to have a copy of 6.1 available for
users to play in before the upgrade. It would just be sooo sweet if
both companies would be up to date and split that cost. If Epicor
does the upgrade, and I have my local network techs setting up and
installing the servers and jet direct cards, my main purpose would be
to coordinate/supervise full project, administrate users/security on
new servers and Vantage upgrade, cutover workstations to begin using
new co2 LAN (and disconnect from co1 LAN) - load network client and
settings and update rb reports. Once the users see new reports
in 6.1, they may no longer use rb reports, so I will be selective on
what I update. Thanks for the heads up on the drive sizes also, it
makes sense. I have run out of drive space in years past, during
Vantage upgrades which is the worst possible time. On our current NT
server they recommended a type of Raid 0/1 combination. You
recommend Raid 1. Has this changed? The servers will all come with
GB nics, and like I said, co2 already has a GB switch. I will
recommend that co1 upgrade to gb switch at least at the server.
Thanks so much!!

To start with, I sure appreciate this group and all who share their
knowledge! I have searched and have found positive responses on
terminal server, so I am going to give it serious consideration.

Here is my situation:
Vantage is currently on NT4 (500mhz, 512mb RAM), Vantage v5.0,
running 2 companies with 50 total users with buildings close enough
to be on a LAN which I am the (only) IT person/administrator. It
will be known very soon if one of the companies will be sold. If
that happens, there will be a short time to setup a separate LAN,
phone/internet service for company 2 (co2). The phone/internet
service is already in the works - will have 768k internet. What I
have in mind, since co2 will need a new server is to have one big
upgrade, bringing in a W2003 server and upgrading to Vantage
5.1,5.2,6.0,6.1. I might be crazy, but at the same time I want to
get co1 to also purchasing a W2003 server so that the current Vantage
db can be upgraded before it is split onto 2 separate servers (each
co keeping it's own data). (If co1 won't approve, then the db will
be split before the upgrade and only co2 data will be at 6.1). Both
companies have workstations ranging from 200 mhz to 500 mz. To
upgrade old PC's to min req is $500 with some labor added, just not
worth it. To replace all workstations would be extrememly expensive
and time consuming, plus lots of user interuption. This is one
reason the terminal server is so appealing. Also so that in the
future when Vantage is upgraded, I won't need to visit every
workstation to upgrade the Vantage client. Also because we have
remote users that will be able to log in securely and actually be
able to get some work done in Vantage. As I understand it, even
though Vantage 6.1 workstation min requirements are something like
500 mhz, 256mb RAM and Win2000/XPpro, my old 200-500 mhz with 32-
320mb RAM, all of which are Windows 98 can remain where they are and
as they are if I bring in a terminal server, because all workstations
will log into it and all processing will be done there.

At this time I am considering recommending to co2 (and co1) that they
each purchase qty 2, Compaq Proliant MI370 G3 Xeon/2.8 ghz, dual
processor, 3gb RAM, 2 ch smart array controller 128mb, each with 4
hot plug 10k scsi 36.4 hard drives and Windows 2003 server / Terminal
server. (& monitors, backup tape drives,UPSs, etc). (What is the
recommended RAID??) 1 server to be used as the Vantage database
server and the second to be used as the terminal server and
file/print server. (Is it unrealistic to believe that if someday the
Vantage server crashed, that Vantage could actually be restored by
tape onto the second server - I realize it might slow everything
down, but could it be functional in an emergency?) Co2 will have 16
Vantage office users, 0 DC users. (Co1 would have 21 Vntg Office
users and 10 DC users). I will also recommend a sonicwall VPN
firewall (co1 already has one) and jet direct cards for any shared
laser printers. These companies are manufactures, so they do NOT
like to spend $$ on computer systems, therefore whatever is installed
needs to be sufficient far into the future. I hope to be assured by
you guys that this is 'the way to go' and that every user, no matter
the speed of their PC or the amount of RAM they currently have, will
be pleasantly pleased at the lightening speed of the new system, no
matter if local or remote, for years to come. (Co2 has a GB switch,
co1 has 100mb switch.) Is there a limit to the amount of users that
can be logged into the terminal server and still expect good speed??
Co2 will have 20 users, co1 will have 40 users - on serarate LANs.
Anything you see that I could have overlooked? I hear many good
things about Dell's, but I think I will prefer to stick with Compaq
for now due to past experience with local service and the current
network tech I use. I have not yet decided if I will do the Vantage
upgrade - I will have my plate full already, so I may have it done.
I will have 200-300 report builder reports to update also. (When I
have upgraded Vantage in the past, I type out the menu in Excel and
use it for a security sheet so that supervisors can mark what menu
items they want their employees to have. Does anyone else do this
that would like to share a copy??)

I think you are on the right track, I would not try to also do a vantage
upgrade with all the hardware changes but I don't think older versions of
progress are certified for Windows Server 2003. You may want to contact
progress directly and know for sure if the version of vantage and progress
you want to end up on is OK on Windows Server 2003. As for hard disks, I
think disk space is cheap so it makes it easy to select RAID 1 over RAID5.
Mirror up a couple of pairs of drives, 36gig is a small drive these days.
Controllers and Drives is where you get performance from nobody is pegging
Xeon processors and calling them a bottle neck. Since your purchasing new
make sure your running gigabyte Ethernet from the servers to the switches.
