Upgrade from 3.0

Rick

If you had gone to Perspectives, they basically told us to treat it as
if it were a new install not an upgrade. Examine all of your processes and
prepare a training curriculum, especially in your engineering/quoting areas.
I jumped from 4.0 to 6.0 1.5 years ago. Make sure you have lots of hard disk
space on your new server. My db has grown from 2.7 GB to 5.4 in that time.
It had only grown 300 MB the previous year on 4.0.

We are also going to be upgrading at some point this year.
I have a comment about using version 3 on new equipment.
Epicor said they don't support V3 on anything but NT4
So we got a new server and then................
We had a devil of a time getting a new server to work with NT
It took 2-1/2 days to find drivers that worked with all the equipment.
We have also noticed other odd small things happening (printing) when
trying to run V3 on Win2000 and XP.
In order to clean up some problems, which will only get worse with newer
equipment, it is time for us to make the upgrade leap.
5-1/2 years is long enough between upgrades for us.
We are also considering going directly to version 8.

We have pretty much decided we are going to handle this like a new
install rather than an upgrade.
We want to reevaluate our procedures from the ground up instead of just
updating them.

Good Luck

Just a quick question for everyone - we are still on 3.0 and I'm going to be upgrading my server and thought I would upgrade my version of Vantage at the same time.

We stopped paying the support for the software a year or so ago to save some money because we were pretty happy with 3.0 and weren't ready to upgrade. At this point I have all the upgrades to take me to Version 5.2.

Is this a good version or do you recommend going to Version 6.0 ?

Thanks in advance.

If you are going to pay for the upgrades you might as well go all the way. 6.10 is where any patch attention will be prior to 8.0 and sites are being encouraged to get to there and then wait until they are ready for 8.0. There is very little user interface difference between 6.0 and 6.10 and there are a lot of extra features between 5.20 and 6.00.

I would suggest working closely with your CAM to see whether paying back support or just re-buying Vantage is the better route. I think the break even is around 4 years or so depending on your seat count and modules (of which many were not there for 3.0).

Also, prepare for a huge project, lots of user involvement and plenty of training and testing. A lot has changed since 3.0. This might be the equivalent of a whole new implementation project.

Janet,

There are two things that drive the upgrade process - 1. The software
doesn't do something either at all or well that the newer version supports
and 2. Customer Support.

If the only reason your thinking about upgrading is because you have a new
server - but none of two issues above - I'd stick with the old software on
the new server.

Don't forget upgrading requires going through each version change - 3.0
(Novell or Windows) - 4.0, 5.0, 5.2
At the end of the database conversions you will need to make changes to all
your reports due to new tables, fields, and name changes. It won't be
pretty. Also, there is the retraining of your users.

Charles
