OT XP Performance Issue

Turn off all the animation and effects. And the restore function burns up a
lot of resources. -Gary Polvinale

Subject: [Vantage] OT XP Performance Issue

I have a user with a newer PC (purchase in last 6 months) running Windows XP
Pro and he is complaining about performance. It takes a long time to boot, a
long time to do anything etc. I ran a scan looking for adware/spyware,
everything is clean. I opened performance monitor and noticed the CPU Usage
was very high. I looked in task manager to see what was eating up the CPU
and found that wuser32.exe is using 73-76% CPU time all of the time. Tried
to search MS KB but it is down. Anyone seen this? Know how to correct?

Thanks

Todd,

Does the machine have SP2 installed (along with Norton AntiVirus)?
I've seen lots of issues with SP2/NortonAV/other apps.

Is the system referencing a network share that isn't available ?

Uninstall SP2 if it is there - can always reinstall.

Next - goto www.blackviper.com

This website has configuration recommendations for Windows 2000 & XP. The
author lists how various XP services should be set (Auto/manual/disabled)
for how a system is going to be used.

Good Luck,

Charles
