OT: Yahoo Spam

Shirley,

Bought a Telezapper three weeks past.
While you still have to pick up the phone to activate the "zapper" it gives great satisfaction to hear the line disconnect on the other end. (Insert heroic laugh "Another defeat for evil!")

Speaking of spam in all forms, Hubby and I found a little device we use at
home, called a telezapper. Whenever, a telemarketer calls it signals their
computer that our number is disconnected. We get almost no phone spam now.
TeleZapper, Best Buy, $50.00 works good.

It seems Yahoo reset the marketing settings on the group members. When I
checked my account profile/marketing settings all of the different spam
sources were checked a big fat "yes" to send me spam. I changed all to
"no". Hopefully that will cut down on the junk I have been getting. I
recommend everyone to check their settings as well....

Paul is correct - all of our settings have been changed. This is recent,
and it's Yahoo, not the List - I apologize for the inconvenience, but please
*IMMEDIATELY* do go to www.YahooGroups.com and edit your account under the
heading "Edit Your Marketing Preferences".

I have had it up to here with "opt-out". When it comes to our privacy, it
looks like the Federal, State and local govts have opted-out. I must have
received 2 dozen letters from companies I deal with at home, telling me how
they respect my privacy and that if I want any privacy at all from their
marketing teams I have to call or write them to opt-out. Opt-out...
translated, "Kiss your privacy goodbye - your *$$ is mine." You may not
hear from me again in this group, if Yahoo decides that I shouldn't have the
right to free speech either.

So is Yahoo only spamming @... addresses? Or also ones outside their
domain that are Yahoo-Groups recipients?

-Wayne Cox
I haven't received any spam in the last few days. I did go in this morning
and make sure I turned off those options, though.

The only email address I have on my account is my "work" email address which
is where my group messages go. I have to assume this is where they would
send the junk mail. So I have turned off all the selections and sent an
email to everyone here at work to be aware of the Yahoo change if they have
a Yahoo account of any type. I know some people here have Yahoo Finanace
accounts and email notifications of stock news items sent here.

Here in Indiana we have a no-call list. We can register on the net or via
mail with the State Attorney General's Office to be placed on the no-call
lists. Telemarketers are given the list and are prohibited from calling.
If they still call, they are subject to fines. I think most Charities are
exempt. They passed it last year and it seems to be working well.

Shirley,

I had heard of this advertized on TV. Didn't know it was that good. I'm
headed to Best Buy first chance. Thanks for the tip.

Speaking of spam in all forms, Hubby and I found a little device we use at
home, called a telezapper. Whenever, a telemarketer calls it signals their
computer that our number is disconnected. We get almost no phone spam now.
TeleZapper, Best Buy, $50.00 works good.

The only email address I have on my account is my "work" email address
which
is where my group messages go. I have to assume this is where they would
send the junk mail. So I have turned off all the selections and sent an
email to everyone here at work to be aware of the Yahoo change if they
have
a Yahoo account of any type. I know some people here have Yahoo Finanace
accounts and email notifications of stock news items sent here.

I believe only your yahoo email address will get spammed by this. I have 'dozens' of spams on my yahoo account, but never use it for anything. I use my ISP email for everything (including this list) and RARELY get spam. I've been on this list for two years now. I just let my Yahoo account sit idle and collect spam. I probably have hundreds of addresses in there. By the time my 5 mb fills up, I'll get 'unhooked' from the spam because it will be undeliverable.

I'm not worried about it. (Although I did say NO on my account page to additional spam.)

The only unwanted email I have gotten from this list is from Consultants advertising their Vantage wares, and that wasn't so bad to know what's out there for Vantage.

A buddy of mine has something similar, and when I call his house I get a
blast of tones in my ear, like I've called a fax or something. Does your
zapper do that?

Sounds like a good idea, but not if it does that to everyone! BellSouth
has "anonymous call rejection" included with their caller-id service that
I'll invoke if they start bothering me at the new hose.

Here's something else you can do to waste some telemarketer resources: the
predictive dialers they use to connect people eating dinner with
telemarketing agents are programmed to recognize the regular short "hello"
<silence> that most residential phones are answered with. If they hear a
longer message ("you have reached the smith residence") it is assumed to be
an answering machine, and the thing hangs up without connecting to an
agent. If you call my machine, you'll hear: "Hello <silence> you have
reached xxx-xxxx...." This tricks the dialer into connecting an agent and
wasting a small but tangible amount their labor, dailer, long distance, etc.

The zapper gives a short little beep for everyone that calls. I've called
home a number of times and its not annoying or really that noticeable unless
you're looking for it. We screen all our calls anyway and if we really
aren't interested, no ringer and no volume on the A. machine.
