[OT] Spam Through Vantage List?

All the Yahoo.com name means is that the Spammer decided to get an address
at yahoo.com to launch his spam from, or maybe he launches from another
address and the yahoo.com name is just the return address.

the fact that you have or don't have a groups membership on yahoo probably
plays a very minor role in whether you get spam from a yahoo.com address.

When I first opened up my account at a local ISP, before I sent any emails
or gave my new e-mail address to anyone, I had 5-15 spam messages from yahoo
and hotmail addresses coming in each day, as well as from other sites.
yahoo seems to be a popular for pretty popular domain for spammers, though.

When I replied to some of the messages to tell them to remove me from their
lists, the spam load increased. After registering my e-mail with my
Microsoft Passport, and my Yahoo identity, my spam load did not increase any
noticeable amount.

because when I examined the header of the message, the only people it was
sent to were the Vantage list subscribers here, and it was relayed from the
Yahoo group server. Plus its one of the very few pieces of spam I have ever
received in my regular mailbox.

I received one from a different spammer ("OTC Opportunity News") addressed
to "jboyle4@...". The only contact I have with Yahoo is through this
list so I am sure it can from here. This is the first spam I have received
in 4 years and I hope it is not the start of something. I can set up a rule
to delete anything addressed to this address but it is still a concern if
Yahoo has begun to distribute our addresses.

I don't think Yahoo would intentionally do this, but as we have discussed in
the past, some of us have received unsolicited mail based on our membership
on the Vantage list.

Now with a Yahoo account, like Hotmail, its only a matter of time before
spammers find you. Most spammers use software to generate a list of all
possible common addresses, and then form their lists based on the ones that
don't get rejected, so I'm not sure that the two events are related. If you
check the mail headers, you'll probably find that the message didn't
actually originate from Yahoo anyway.

Actually, based on the lack of responses, I would assume the spam is nothing
to do with this list. Its probably just coincidence. I just hope this isn't
a sign of things to come.

I got a spam once that had a group of yahoo emails (including my Yahoo email, which I use mainly for the Yahoo list) and all of the emails on the list started with the same three letters. It's almost as if they were computer generated or systematically going through the alphabet. Odd. I think Brian is right, it's not a list that was released necessarily, but there are ways to get our email addresses in other ways.

Not even 1/8 of a cent.

Its quite true. I play an online role-playing game from Microsoft that
requires you have a Passport or Hotmail account. Of course as soon as people
get Hotmail accounts, BOOM! They fill up with spam, causing many accusations
about who sold the addresses. However, my accounts that have unusual names
have never receive any spam.

My Hotmail and Yahoo accounts are simply spam receptacles at this point, but
I have to have them in order to maintain my memberships.
