Hello, I’m wanting to store various bits of information against part records that relate to the packaging around the part (carton, tape, labels). I’ve had a look around on the part and can’t see anywhere that makes sense to store this in the standard fields, so I’m thinking that custom fields will be needed.
Does anyone do anything similar to this, and if so did you end up creating some custom fields?
Can you not use ‘gross weight’ for this? Part.GrossWeight. If not, why not? Are you counting the weight of the transport unit too?
Would be better to use the standard fields if you can because they’ll be used and calculated upon throughout parts of the system, e.g., shipments
I recommend adding such things as the carton, any packaging material (bubble wrap, shipping peanuts, corrugated dividers, etc.), labels, and tape to the MoM. This allows you to capture the cost of such materials as well as backflushing packaging material. As for the weight, I would use the Unit Net Weight field for the finished part without the packaging material defined in the MoM, and the Unit Gross Weight for the weight of the finished part with the packaging material defined in MoM. Use the Attributes tab of the Part record for outside dimensions of the packaged part.
