I created a "set field" rule on the "Alt" level of the configurator for field part.searchword and assign it a value (CFG-GEN) so I'll be able to tell.
For parts that are already created, I think I remember that you can go into the Engineering Workbench and Get Details... and parts that were created in the configurator will have "Copy Configuration" checked. (This implies to me that there might be something out there keeping track, but I don't know what it is.)
