Same here, GParted has always worked on our NTFS partitions with no problem,
but we don't use compression. If you need to change a NTFS partition with
compression then I'd recommend using Microsoft's DiskPart.exe. As long as
the drive isn't the boot drive, you shouldn't need to boot into a special
mode. If it is, I've used Bart's PE Builder to make a boot CD. Not as
easy as a Ubuntu LIveCD.

I'll put in another vote for GParted. I've used it on plenty of PCs
without problems, but never on a server. It seems a pretty stable
product but remember it won't deal with NTFS compressed partitions.
As long as you're properly backed up, then give it a go!

Does anyone know of a package like Partition Magic that will run on
MS-2003-Srv?

Todd,
I am not sure of a less expensive product, but I know that Symantec has
something like this.
The default Dell Config for a server's root is 12 gb (recommeded from
Microsoft) but with the OS, SP 1, and some small standard files that are
necessary to run, this is pretty much useless..

Dell would only attempt to sell me the Symantec package to do this....but it
was a little expensive...
So, if you do not find anything else...it is an option...although less than
favorable.

Also Paragon software makes a Hard Disk Manager server edition, but will
run you $600.



I just extended a RAID 5 array on a SBS Server 2003 Poweredge using
Acronis, with no problem at all.

I had run into the same problem withe a Windows 2003 Server with a
RAID-5 configuration. I found an Open Source program called Gparted by
Gnome. You can download it and write it to a CD. Then boot to it and
it has an easy to use GUI interface. Go to this site:
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/index.php
<http://gparted.sourceforge.net/index.php> and download the Windows
version. If you have unpatitioned space it is very quick. If you are
moving partitions it takes some time.

You can also download the Ubuntu live-CD and boot from that to use GParted.



We've also made a boot disk using Barts PE Builder and used Microsoft's
DiskPart.exe utility to expand partitions.
