Physical Inventory Generated Tags

I had to repost this issue because we are starting our inventory on this coming Wednesday.

Does anyone have some ideas on how to properly print the 2-tag sheets that come from Epicor? We have to continually stop and re-feed the paper into the printer because the report doesn't add the extra line break at the end of the page and the labels start to drift.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Vantage version 5.0:
Currently, if you 'generate tags' in count entry, you are suppose
purchase 2 part tags to be printed 3 per sheet on a dot matrix printer
from Epicor. (I just generated tags Training, we have over 4400 tags,
which would be 1400 dot matrix pages).

Has anyone come up with something printed on a laser printer -
possibly making changes to the Crystal form to a half or full sheet??
We should be able to purchase 2 color paper (ie. white prints, then
identical pink carbonized prints out). Even if you had to have
someone staple the white and pink pages together with an electric
stapler, it wouldn't be any worse than someone having to rip the dot
matrix tags apart, and laser prints much faster, less chance of a jam,
etc.

I printed some test tags on regular paper (laser) and tried to scan
the tag number into Vantage so I wouldn't have to manually enter the 9
digit tag, but the barcode reader did not read it (it would read some,
but not others). It would be nice to scan the tag# so Vantage can
take you to that record, then tab a few times to qty. Do I need to
change something on the Crystal form?

You guys have such outstanding ideas, thought I would pick your
brain...has anyone tried anything like this?

I don't know if there is an easy way to do this. I am not a huge
fan of our own process, but I don't have a better way. We use the
carbonless 2 part, 3"x6" inventory tags available from various
office supply companies. We "generate" the tags in Vantage 6.1,
then ODBC the tag info to a Word mail merge to create 2 sets of
1"x2.75" labels. The labels are hand applied to both sheets of the
2 part tag with the matching tag number.

We only deal with 4000 count tags and do some maintenance to
eliminate unnecessary tags before they are generated. As I said
before, I don't like the process, but I haven't created a better
one. (Oh, how I have tried.)

I use a Report Builder report format and I print about 19 or so lines on a
page to count with. I don't use serial numbers, but I use Lot numbers,
which are accommodated. It is a very simple layout that works for us. No
bar codes either. But the thought of thousands of pages printing out was
way beyond my idea of a count sheet system.

In a previous life, we altered the print program to print the tag on
the left and right side of a laser form that was perforated vertically
down the center. The right side of the page had a red stripe on it to
distinguish the from the left side. The red stripped side is pulled
and the other side stays on the floor. The downside was the quantity
has to be written twice for each tag. We thought about a carbon
sticker (write on the label, peel back and it leaves the copy) but the
price was prohibitive.

From a "reengineering" standpoint, I had heard of a company that only
had one tag and when it was pulled, a colored adhesive dot was left
with the counter's initials. There was a different color every year.
This removed the need for the second copy.

off-the-shelf carbon-paper tags and then enter them into the system with
the tag number that is on the paper. Works out ok but the counters have
to write all the part numbers, description, location and count on the
tags. We do the WIP counts in an Access database (download the jobs and
print out count sheets).

We also do not use the tags printed by the system. We generate our tags via
crystal report. Our tags are printed on 8.5 x 11 sheets of paper, this gets
21 tag numbers per sheet. Each tag number has all the information for our
count teams to conduct inventory ( location, part number, description, and
blank columns for the counter\recorder to enter information i.e the counts
as well as counted by, date counted, and time counted. Works great for us.

Paul, is this crystal report something you would be willing to share?
Do you still print them from the Count entry screen? I would be very
interested if you are willing to share. I absolutely hate the tags we
are using now, there are only a few tags per sheet.

it is not printed using the count entry screen. It is printed in materials
management, inventory management, reports. It was placed there by our IT

We also do not use the tags printed by the system. We generate our
tags

crystal report. Our tags are printed on 8.5 x 11 sheets of paper, this
gets
21 tag numbers per sheet. Each tag number has all the information for

blank columns for the counter\recorder to enter information i.e the
counts
as well as counted by, date counted, and time counted. Works great for

page to count with. I don't use serial numbers, but I use Lot

which are accommodated. It is a very simple layout that works for
us.

Currently, if you 'generate tags' in count entry, you are suppose
purchase 2 part tags to be printed 3 per sheet on a dot matrix
printer
from Epicor. (I just generated tags Training, we have over 4400
tags,
which would be 1400 dot matrix pages).

Has anyone come up with something printed on a laser printer -
possibly making changes to the Crystal form to a half or full
sheet??
We should be able to purchase 2 color paper (ie. white prints,
then
identical pink carbonized prints out). Even if you had to have
someone staple the white and pink pages together with an electric
stapler, it wouldn't be any worse than someone having to rip the
dot
matrix tags apart, and laser prints much faster, less chance of a
jam,
etc.

I printed some test tags on regular paper (laser) and tried to
scan
the tag number into Vantage so I wouldn't have to manually enter
the
9
digit tag, but the barcode reader did not read it (it would read
some,
but not others). It would be nice to scan the tag# so Vantage can
take you to that record, then tab a few times to qty. Do I need
to
change something on the Crystal form?

You guys have such outstanding ideas, thought I would pick your
brain...has anyone tried anything like this?

No. Count tags are given to our counter\recorders. They conduct counts on
that block of tag numbers. Each count tag must have a quantity entered. Once
a sheet is complete it is handed in to the data entry clerk. The data entry
clerk enters the information in via the count entry screen.

No. Count tags are given to our counter\recorders. They conduct counts

We should be able to purchase 2 color paper (ie. white prints,

someone staple the white and pink pages together with an
electric
stapler, it wouldn't be any worse than someone having to rip the
dot
matrix tags apart, and laser prints much faster, less chance of
a
jam,
etc.

I printed some test tags on regular paper (laser) and tried to
scan
the tag number into Vantage so I wouldn't have to manually enter
the
9
digit tag, but the barcode reader did not read it (it would read
some,
but not others). It would be nice to scan the tag# so Vantage
can
take you to that record, then tab a few times to qty. Do I need
to
change something on the Crystal form?

You guys have such outstanding ideas, thought I would pick your
brain...has anyone tried anything like this?

I was just told that the report we use is a report builder report. Please
keep in mind that whether they are Report builder reports or Crystal
reports, you would have to know how to add them to the vantage menu and
Crystal would need the ODBC driver setup. Not sure if the report I use will
help you. Is anyone in your IT dept able to create reports?

I was just told that the report we use is a report builder report.
Please
keep in mind that whether they are Report builder reports or Crystal
reports, you would have to know how to add them to the vantage menu and
Crystal would need the ODBC driver setup. Not sure if the report I use

help you. Is anyone in your IT dept able to create reports?

Vantage version 5.0:
Currently, if you 'generate tags' in count entry, you are
suppose
purchase 2 part tags to be printed 3 per sheet on a dot matrix
printer
from Epicor. (I just generated tags Training, we have over 4400
tags,
which would be 1400 dot matrix pages).

Has anyone come up with something printed on a laser printer -
possibly making changes to the Crystal form to a half or full
sheet??
We should be able to purchase 2 color paper (ie. white prints,
then
identical pink carbonized prints out). Even if you had to have
someone staple the white and pink pages together with an
electric
stapler, it wouldn't be any worse than someone having to rip the
dot
matrix tags apart, and laser prints much faster, less chance of
a
jam,
etc.

I printed some test tags on regular paper (laser) and tried to
scan
the tag number into Vantage so I wouldn't have to manually enter
the
9
digit tag, but the barcode reader did not read it (it would read
some,
but not others). It would be nice to scan the tag# so Vantage
can
take you to that record, then tab a few times to qty. Do I need
to
change something on the Crystal form?

You guys have such outstanding ideas, thought I would pick your
brain...has anyone tried anything like this?

New question, same subject...
In the past, we have used the 2 part manual hand written tags. Each
section of the plant was 'issued' a series of tag numbers. When
those tag numbers were all verified as returned in sequential order,
the people in that section were excused to go home.

If we were to use the generated tag #'s, it is probable that the
tags will not end up in the exact sections that we have assigned on
a map. How do others handle verifying and auditing?

Ann,

We have our warehouse / bin combinations set up to match areas in
our warehouse. We deal with a lot of small volumes of small parts,
so we are not dealing with bin capacity or maximizing forklift runs
through a 20 acre warehouse. I sequence our generated tag numbers
to match our two part tags (with manually applied labels). I gap a
little between warehouses to allow for blank tags (a pre-Vantage
problem we have almost eliminated.)

I know that this is very late. but we developed an Access application to
print inventory tags on a perforated 8-1/2x11 sheet (tag 1 on top tag 2 on
the bottom).

This means that the figures must be written two times a disadvantage but
we did not find it a problem. Ours is not a huge inventory (perhaps 2500
cards) but this worked very well. No jamming of the dot matrix printer,
fast and quiet printing and no carbon copies so the text was legible.

We actually added logic to manage the "printed tag" indicator in the count
set.
This would have to be modified to fit your database (addresses and ODBC
links) but the logic, forms and reports should work for you if you want
it.

purchase 2 part tags to be printed 3 per sheet on a dot matrix printer

Has anyone come up with something printed on a laser printer -
possibly making changes to the Crystal form to a half or full sheet??
We should be able to purchase 2 color paper (ie. white prints, then

someone staple the white and pink pages together with an electric
stapler, it wouldn't be any worse than someone having to rip the dot
