Printer problems

It does print directly from the parallel port. So it must be a problem with
the jetdirect. Still seems odd that only the two XP PC's have this problem.
I can still print through the same jet direct.

I'll look for new software for the jetdirect.

Why would NetBIOS make a difference? Isn't the jetdiret a tcpip device?

Mitchell:

Don't remember whether I saw this on the thread or not, but can you print
directly to the printer via the local parallel port? If not, could be XP
print services is messed up.

In your xp network settings try enabling netbios over tcp/ip.

A HP2500CM is attached to the HP500X jet direct. The IP address from the
test page matches the address I used to set up the jet direct. I didn't use
the HP wizard, if I remember correctly it didn't' work well with XP. The
"add printer" function does recognize the HP500X and correctly asks for the
parallel printer port (it has three).

Remember, this worked Friday. I can still print to it from another computer
on the network. The only thing I can find is that neither XP PC will ping
the jetdirect.

The win2k server and my win98 pc do ping the jetdirect.

Print off a test page by holding the button on the jet direct down and see
what the IP information is. What printer is attached to jet direct? What
type of port did you create on the XP box for that printer? HP has a
network install printer wizard.
Are you using that?

I deleted the printer from the Win200 server. Didn't see "refresh" anywhere
under configure port. I deleted it from the WinXP box. Tried to add it as
a local printer but XP won't let you do that. Either a 'power user' doesn't
have enough privileges to do so or XP is "smart" enough to know that a local
printer is not plugged in. I logged in as administrator, added the
jetdirect as a local printer, install ed driver and printed a test page. It
just sits in the queue until it times out. The printer status is ready.

The plot thickens. The server will ping the jetdirect, my win98 will ping
the jetdirect, both XP boxes refuse to ping the jetdirect. We all run
through the same HP switch. All of their other network drives, CAD,
Vantage, etc work just fine.

Any ideas? Everybody swears up and down they didn't change anything.

The engineering dept has a HP2500 on a multi-port JetDirect. It worked fine
on Friday. It won't print today. Both engineering PC's are WinXP and the
server is Win2000. I can print fine from my Win98 PC, but I think it prints
direct to the JetDirect and not through the server.

A test page from the server or either engineering PC just sits in the queue.
A test page from my pc prints fine. I can ping the printer from the server.
Any thoughts short of rebooting the server? It is my vantage server so I
don't want to reboot unless I have to.

We have two servers now so I should probably move the print services. If it
ain't broke, don't fix it you know.

Your JetDirect box *IS* a print server. Have all of your
workstations print directly to it if possible.

When you use the add printer wizard, select local printer, then
choose to add a new port (tcp/ip). Enter in the IP Address of your
JetDirect box, select the port, then choose the correct printer
driver. All done.

Try this:

Goto your server - sign on -

Goto your printers folder

Right click - goto properties

Click on "Ports" tab

Click on "Configure Port"

Click on "Refresh" - nothing visible will happen

Click on "Ok" and "OK" to exit your way out of the properties ...

------------------------

I have ONE printer out of about 20 feeding through one of my servers that
about once a month seems to get confused. On the printer end everything
looks ok - on the server end everything looks ok. If I look at the port the
NIC address showing is correct - but I still have to hit refresh to
"reestablish the link" ???

There is probably a more scientific description for this but it's Monday.

Hope this helps,

Todd Anderson

Double check the printer properties to make sure someone did not "pause" the

Are you referencing it by name or IP address? Is its address static or DHCPed?

It might be something wrong with your DNS, or maybe a conflicting name to
IP mapping in a hosts or lmhosts file.

Are you referencing it by name or IP address? Is its address static or
DHCPed?

It might be something wrong with your DNS, or maybe a conflicting name to
IP mapping in a hosts or lmhosts file.
