Printing Issues

A few times a week, our users are unable to print or preview any reports (they show up as active on the System Manager, but nothing ever happens). We then restart the Task Agent and PRocess Server appservers. This solves the issue and all of the reports in the queue then print. It seems crazy that we would have to do this so often. Does anyone have any idea as to what could be causing this or what we could do to keep this from happening on a regular basis?

The follwing is a repost of a list I posted last March. It appears though that evena ll of these sugestions do not always solve the issue. But maybe you could get lucky and hit on one of them as a fix.

I have added a few new items (16-18) in particular #16 related to other software using Crystal as a Report Writer.

Below is the check list I have extracted from various archived mail messages and things I have had success with from time to time. Sorry if this wraps badly when Yahoo passes it along. This checklist is pretty much related to only freezes when printing Crystal forms. If anyone has other things to add please do so and suggest where in the list they should go (as far as most--->least likely to help).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roughly in order of what to try first

1. Download and update the latest CR85 patches from the Epicor FTP site (Vantage\Crystal folder)
Note: The one in Vantage\Crystal is a newer zip file than in the mfg6\Crystal folder - if that matters

2. Update Crystal development PC(s) with the patch

3. Update Client PCs with the database-export patch (fixes missing details issue and perhaps others?)

4. Compare all Crystal DLL version on the development PC with the Mfgsys61\DLL folder

5. Any that are newer on the development PC

A) Rename the current one in Mfgsys61\DLL to preserve it (append -old to extensions)
B) Copy development PC version to Mfgsys61\DLL

6. Copy all CR type .DLL files from the Mfgsys61\DLL folder to the client's system32 (or system) folder

7. Also copy P2BXBSE.DLL to the client

8. Make double sure CRPE32.DLL on the client is same as Mfgsys61\DLL version

9. Copy Sscsdk80.dll in the Program Files\Seagate Software\Shared folder to the client System32 folder

10. Also find sscsdk32.dll and copy it
NOTE - the above file(s) when not on client can bomb crystal reports that have graphic images (logos)

11. Run forcereg.bat on client (note possible errors in file locations in Mfgsys61 version - edit to check)

12. If Windows 98 replace the spools.dll file with one from Windows-ME

13. Change driver on HP LaserJet printer to HP-LJ II or similar old driver

14. Create a distributed report (any will do) and distribute to the client (will shape up some .DLLs)

15. Scan the registry for all references to old Progress versions and old servers and delete them
- backup registry first!!!!

16. If using some other software with Crystal as a Reprot Writer tool (like FAS or ADP) the .DLLs for those can clobber the ones that match Epicor's Crystal based reports and the server based DLL's they depend on. Some of the above suggestions will resolve this BUT easier still to verify it is to uninstall the offending report writer (manually check and uninstall all CR related DLLs) and re-install the Vantage client and see if that makes the problem go away.

17. Try keeping the MFGWRK61 folder empty.

18. Re-install the printer as a new name and use an older more generic driver.

Suggestion: Stop after each step or two and see if the problem went away so that you know what was
probably the problem.

There was another routine I saw once called RegProgDLLs.exe that had something to do with setting the
registry for Progress .DLLs. There could be some hooks to Crystal in there that might be an issue. Probably have to obtain this from Epicor Support and they can say if it is relevant or not.

FYI-



I spoke to Support just a little awhile ago. They stated and I quote
"there is a known issue with the latest versions of Crystal, Progress
and Vantage related to print driver translation". Further they stated
if a user prints anything outside of the default printer they may
experience an ungraceful exit from the system albeit sporadically. In
my environment customer service not only prints quotes and orders, but
often faxes the same documents using RightFax, which uses a separate
print driver in effect using a non-default printer. Support further
stated there wasn't a fix on the horizon, but said it 'probably' would
be rectified in version 8 and beyond.

Below is the check list I have extracted from various archived mail
messages and things I have had success with from time to time. Sorry if
this wraps badly when Yahoo passes it along. This checklist is pretty
much related to only freezes when printing Crystal forms. If anyone has
other things to add please do so and suggest where in the list they
should go (as far as most--->least likely to help).

Roughly in order of what to try first

1. Download and update the latest CR85 patches from the Epicor FTP site
(Vantage\Crystal folder)
Note: The one in Vantage\Crystal is a newer zip file than in the
mfg6\Crystal folder - if that matters

2. Update Crystal development PC(s) with the patch

3. Update Client PCs with the database-export patch (fixes missing
details issue and perhaps others?)

4. Compare all Crystal DLL version on the development PC with the
Mfgsys61\DLL folder

5. Any that are newer on the development PC

A) Rename the current one in Mfgsys61\DLL to preserve it (append
-old to extensions)
B) Copy development PC version to Mfgsys61\DLL

6. Copy all CR type .DLL files from the Mfgsys61\DLL folder to the
client's system32 (or system) folder

7. Also copy P2BXBSE.DLL to the client

8. Make double sure CRPE32.DLL on the client is same as Mfgsys61\DLL
version

9. Copy Sscsdk80.dll in the Program Files\Seagate Software\Shared folder
to the client System32 folder

10. Also find sscsdk32.dll and copy it
NOTE - the above file(s) when not on client can bomb crystal
reports that have graphic images (logos)

11. Run forcereg.bat on client (note possible errors in file locations
in Mfgsys61 version - edit to check)

12. If Windows 98 replace the spools.dll file with one from Windows-ME

13. Change driver on HP LaserJet printer to HP-LJ II or similar old
driver

14. Create a distributed report (any will do) and distribute to the
client (will shape up some .DLLs)

15. Scan the registry for all references to old Progress versions and
old servers and delete them
- backup registry first!!!!

16. If using some other software with Crystal as a Reprot Writer tool
(like FAS or ADP) the .DLLs for those can clobber the ones that match
Epicor's Crystal based reports and the server based DLL's they depend
on. Some of the above suggestions will resolve this BUT easier still to
verify it is to uninstall the offending report writer (manually check
and uninstall all CR related DLLs) and re-install the Vantage client and
see if that makes the problem go away.

17. Try keeping the MFGWRK61 folder empty.

18. Re-install the printer as a new name and use an older more generic
driver.

Suggestion: Stop after each step or two and see if the problem went
away so that you know what was
probably the problem.

There was another routine I saw once called RegProgDLLs.exe that had
something to do with setting the
registry for Progress .DLLs. There could be some hooks to Crystal in
there that might be an issue. Probably have to obtain this from Epicor
Support and they can say if it is relevant or not.

I have been having some odd printing issues with Vantage as of late.
At various times during the day and not everyday certain users are
ungracefully logged out of Vantage or kicked out when attempting to

with other applications such as Mail (exchange), etc. Short of re-

I think it has been a few months since the discussion, but there are
a lot of us with similar issues.

We are at 6.1 with XP workstations and have the same sporadic
problems. I've been working with support for a few months but
haven't made any headway. They've given me a program called "Black
Box" to run on some problem machines that records in a log what is
happening to the program when the crash occurs. I've sent them
several log files and a few different times they've requested that I
try something different, but it hasn't helped yet. Most of the time
they haven't been real speedy about getting back to me and I'm not
holding my breath for a solution. I think they are really busy
trying to support those going to 8.0 so the focus isn't there to fix
this problem.

Maybe a few more voices into support will get them motivated again?

Hi Brian,

We at General Sheet Metal have been fighting a problem as well.
It seems that when ever our controller is working on job closings her
XP machine locks up. This also happened when she had a 2000 machine.
It occurs whether she is using the lan client or the citrix client.
We also went through using the black box.

The problem persists.

The way I look at it; it could be worse, now it is intermittent.
I do feel your pain.

I will glad to join in on getting Vantage to do something about it.

I think it has been a few months since the discussion, but there are
a lot of us with similar issues.

We are at 6.1 with XP workstations and have the same sporadic
problems. I've been working with support for a few months but
haven't made any headway. They've given me a program called "Black
Box" to run on some problem machines that records in a log what is
happening to the program when the crash occurs. I've sent them
several log files and a few different times they've requested that I
try something different, but it hasn't helped yet. Most of the time
they haven't been real speedy about getting back to me and I'm not
holding my breath for a solution. I think they are really busy
trying to support those going to 8.0 so the focus isn't there to fix
this problem.

Maybe a few more voices into support will get them motivated again?

Had the same problem here, as well as local database corruption issues
on some machines.

We punted and moved away from Crystal reports in favor of Cold Fusion's
report builder. Development time is way lower than crystal, it doesn't
crash, and you get native support for excel spreadsheets and pdf outputs
via a web client.

Just successfully built a web based pop-up that displays a defective
material notice when a user enters non-conforming product in their floor
labor reporting. (business activity database trigger calls progress BAM
which calls web browser directing it to the url for the cold fusion
report passing the DMR number, which the cold fusion report queries from
the database to populate the form.)

Just waiting for Vantage to wake up and allow definition to a url
instead of crystal. Maybe 8.0?

We at General Sheet Metal have been fighting a problem as well.
It seems that when ever our controller is working on job closings her
XP machine locks up. This also happened when she had a 2000 machine.
It occurs whether she is using the lan client or the citrix client.
We also went through using the black box.

The problem persists.

The way I look at it; it could be worse, now it is intermittent.
I do feel your pain.

I will glad to join in on getting Vantage to do something about it.

I think it has been a few months since the discussion, but there are
a lot of us with similar issues.

We are at 6.1 with XP workstations and have the same sporadic
problems. I've been working with support for a few months but
haven't made any headway. They've given me a program called "Black
Box" to run on some problem machines that records in a log what is
happening to the program when the crash occurs. I've sent them
several log files and a few different times they've requested that I
try something different, but it hasn't helped yet. Most of the time
they haven't been real speedy about getting back to me and I'm not
holding my breath for a solution. I think they are really busy
trying to support those going to 8.0 so the focus isn't there to fix
this problem.

Maybe a few more voices into support will get them motivated again?

Yep, we have the same problem and the users are learning to live with it
but they occasionally get nasty. I called the helpdesk several times and
they respond that it will be fixed in the next release.

with other applications such as Mail (exchange), etc. Short of re-

I had the same problem with completing jobs. I found that if you
complete/print them from the "open jobs" tab instead of the "candidate" tab,
the problem went away. Someone in the group suggested this a few months
ago, I think there was a bug in the candidates filter.

We at General Sheet Metal have been fighting a problem as well.
It seems that when ever our controller is working on job closings her
XP machine locks up. This also happened when she had a 2000 machine.
It occurs whether she is using the lan client or the citrix client.
We also went through using the black box.

The problem persists.

The way I look at it; it could be worse, now it is intermittent.
I do feel your pain.

I will glad to join in on getting Vantage to do something about it.

I think it has been a few months since the discussion, but there are
a lot of us with similar issues.

We are at 6.1 with XP workstations and have the same sporadic
problems. I've been working with support for a few months but
haven't made any headway. They've given me a program called "Black
Box" to run on some problem machines that records in a log what is
happening to the program when the crash occurs. I've sent them
several log files and a few different times they've requested that I
try something different, but it hasn't helped yet. Most of the time
they haven't been real speedy about getting back to me and I'm not
holding my breath for a solution. I think they are really busy
trying to support those going to 8.0 so the focus isn't there to fix
this problem.

Maybe a few more voices into support will get them motivated again?

I have a few of computers where Vantage crashes when printing. Most
of the computers are hooked up to the same printer, and have no issue.
I've updated the drivers for the printers. I have checked all
updates for windows. What else is left to check?
Do the users who are crashing have permission on the
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS directory? I have seen this issue when
the users do not have Read / Write and Delete permission on this folder. If
they do not have Delete permission, they will work OK until they get too
many files in there.
