A couple things I've seen...and yes, sometimes it means a registry cleaning.
1. Sometimes the next screen in the network client install does not come up...it activates and then remains shrunk at the bottom of the screen and you have to click on the task bar items for it in order to answer prompts. If autohide is on it might not be noticed down there. If it takes awhile I usuallt try the Alt-Tab technique to switch to the hidden screen.
2. If 6.1 is on a different server and the 5.2 server is no longer in service then the HOSTS file may have to be edited to remove references to the old server...otherwise the network gets confused and things can hang.
