.r files

I found one company on the net that could decompile .r files. They will not
do it unless you own the code.

What are .r files? What are .p and .w files?

Jasper

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
The .r files are compiled Progress code (.w or .p and .i files).

The .w and .p files are Progress source code.

A .i file is an include file (repetitive code included in more than one
source code file).

Jasper,
If you have progress installed on any client machine, you can write your
own code. I have written progress code to do exports from Vantage. You can
also use other means. Most simple way to start would be to create a blank
file on your desktop like "test.p". (I use .p for my progress code). Now
double-click the test file and it should open in "Procedure Editor". This
is is where you can write code. Click on HELP to access Progress commands.
You don't need a compiler to run the code. Just right-click and select RUN
(or press F2, or click Compile/Run from the menu). If you are accessing the
Vantage Database, you will also need a connection to the database. To do
this, right-click and select "Insert Database Field". It will tell you you
need to be connected and bring up the connection window. Fill in the
appropriate fields for Connecting to the Database... Similar to the report
builder settings. When done, you should be able to see your Vantage fields
and tables.

Once you have written your code, you can run it from a command line if
desired, or from VBForm fields.

Have fun, and keep asking questions. There are some good documents
(Programmers Handbook, and Progress Help) on the Progress website.

With just progress installed, you cannot compile your progress code, persay.
You have to buy the Progress Programming Toolkit (or whatever it is called)
for a couple thousand dollars. Then you can make really fance programs more
easily, with windows and dialog boxes, etc. The compiled code probably runs
much faster.

With Progress installed that comes with Vantage you could technically run
those fancier programs, but you would have to design all your own widgets,
windows, and wuffers (buffers) "on the fly". For simple programs, Progress
works great. If you want to do fancy stuff, you might want to buy the full
package. Other's, perhaps, could speak to that.

I do not believe that there is a decompiler for Progress. Compiled code is
more efficient than running source code.

There is a decompiler for Progress. I am told it does not work very
well, haven't had time to test for myself. Besides it would be illegal
to use on Epicor's .r files. :-)

Compiled code just saves you the time it takes to compile the code at
run time. A very simple program takes 1-2 seconds to compile.

I do not believe that there is a decompiler for Progress. Compiled code
is
more efficient than running source code.

What's the point of having a compiled report? Are we able to take a
compiled report an revert it back to the source code?

Thanks,

Jasper,
If you have progress installed on any client machine, you can write
your
own code. I have written progress code to do exports from Vantage. You
can
also use other means. Most simple way to start would be to create a
blank
file on your desktop like "test.p". (I use .p for my progress code).
Now
double-click the test file and it should open in "Procedure Editor".
This
is is where you can write code. Click on HELP to access Progress
commands.
You don't need a compiler to run the code. Just right-click and select
RUN
(or press F2, or click Compile/Run from the menu). If you are accessing
the
Vantage Database, you will also need a connection to the database. To
do
this, right-click and select "Insert Database Field". It will tell you
you
need to be connected and bring up the connection window. Fill in the
appropriate fields for Connecting to the Database... Similar to the
report
builder settings. When done, you should be able to see your Vantage
fields
and tables.

Once you have written your code, you can run it from a command line if
desired, or from VBForm fields.

Have fun, and keep asking questions. There are some good documents
(Programmers Handbook, and Progress Help) on the Progress website.

What software do you need to create/compile your own code?

The .r files are compiled Progress code (.w or .p and .i files).

The .w and .p files are Progress source code.

A .i file is an include file (repetitive code included in more than
one
source code file).

Is it possible to view the contents of a .r file?

Thanks,
Jasper

You can open with Wordpad or a program like Hijack (but not Autovue). ".r" files are compiled .p and .w routines (right?). So unless there is a "decompiler" I would not think so. You would have to have the original source code (the .p or .w file it started out as). Since Epicor is pretty tight with the source I doubt you can get it from them or find a decompiler.
