I need to make a correction and have been shown the error of my ways from Epicor support in the email I received below :
Hi Zac,
just to clarify- ODBC connectivity to the database is controlled through a database agent which is separate from the appservers. You can still connect via ODBC with the appservers off. Just an FYI
Thanks!

For monitoring the log files that is on my low priority "To Do" list but I do know that it can be done somehow with what I use. As for Nagios I gave up on it before finding out.
As for monitoring DB connectivity it has to be done through an ODBC connection. I could not find any native tools or programs outside of Open Edge that can be used to access the DB except ODBC. My understanding is that an ODBC connection still goes through an App Server. And as long as the ODBC connection can be established the app servers are up. I know that Linux supports ODBC, but as for Nagios being able to poll an ODBC connection I would have to research that. It would be similar to monitoring SMTP, LDAP or other services.

So are you monitoring anything Epicor-specific? I'm actually using Nagios (I don't disagree that it's a little bit of a pain to configure) but I'm looking for particulars around monitoring OpenEdge/Progress/Epicor to tell me when something's out of the ordinary. Ultimately, it probably wouldn't matter what tool you used for monitoring and reporting as long as I knew *what* to monitor.
Since AppServers get turned on as needed, it's hard to monitor, and with multiple core systems, monitoring CPU load doesn't tell me a lot unless all the cores are full. Monitoring internal OpenEdge stats of some sort I think would be most helpful.
