Semi-OT: Thin Clients

We use WYSE S30s for "desktop" users, and WYSE 1200LEs for data
collection. The units themselves are not that expensive ($330 for the
S30s & $260 for the 1200s), but after you tap on the Citrix CAL for $211
& the TS CAL for $72 the cost starts to compare to purchasing a PC.
With the thin client you would also need a server dedicated to them.
After dividing out the cost of the server by 20 users, adding the CALS,
and the cost of the unit, we came in at a break even of $900 / user.

The great thing about all this, is the next network major upgrade should
only cost you the cost of the server. For my figures I calculated $300
/ user ($6000 / 20 users).

I am not totally convinced the Citrix was necessary, but may start
changing my mind after we purchase an additional server for load
balancing.

At Electroimpact, the speed improvement on 6.x using Terminal Server is
substantial but on 8, negligible. But we'll still use Terminal Server
for the 200 people that float in/out sharing 10 licenses.

I've been purchasing Televideo units for about $299 each for the last 5
years. They just recently sold to another company but I was able to buy
23 units for $5.00 each on ebay. They all came in and work great.

Some big hospital is getting rid of all their units.

I dont use Citrix but went with http://www.propalms.com instead. Much
cheaper and does everything I would need Citrix to do.

I love the thin clients. It saves me at least one IT employee. The
only thing I am worried about is Vantage 8.0. Currently I am running 25
+ vantage clients on each terminal server with dual 2.8Ghz Xeon
processors and 4GB ram. If you go by the Vantage 8 specs, I would need
1GB of ram and a 3Ghz processor for each user. It doesn't sound like
the architecture of Vantage 8.0 is very thin client friendly. I would
love to be proven wrong on this. I think the specs on V8 are just
ridiculous.

Thanks
Jeremy

For those of you who use thin clients, what are the benefits and how
hard was it to implement?

Did Epicor provide any documentation?

Thanks in advance...

The majority of our users are running off of thin clients.

The benfits for us:
1. Cost savings (we would have had to purchase beefy workstations to run Vantage, this was a much cheaper ave.)
2. Centralized administration (When pacthes/hot fixes come out, I only worry about 2 servers, and I can test it right away to ensure that everything is working properly)
3. Because of #2, huge time savings
4. I can help anyone right from my desk because I can shadow them via Citrix

Was it hard to implement. Not at all, much easier than rolling out 20 new workstations.

Hope this helps.

I would like to know what others pay for usable units as well. I have been receiving mailings for one model called "NTAVO Thin Client Terminal" that says "Starting at $149". I was thinking to spec'ing something like this, for V8, with a LCD monitor (perhaps touch screen) as our DC stations in the plant which run nothing but Vantage DC. Anyone using NTAVO clients?

Gary,
I have purchased volume licensing from MS. So I install a copy of MS Office on my Citrix server, and I have enough licenses for the users that connect.

You're right. That sounds pretty simple and inexpensive. Thanks. -Gary

Gary,
I have purchased volume licensing from MS. So I install a copy of MS
Office on my Citrix server, and I have enough licenses for the users that
connect.

Kelly,

How do you handle Office and other software for those users?

The majority of our users are running off of thin clients.

The benfits for us:
1. Cost savings (we would have had to purchase beefy workstations to run
Vantage, this was a much cheaper ave.)
2. Centralized administration (When pacthes/hot fixes come out, I only
worry about 2 servers, and I can test it right away to ensure that
everything is working properly)
3. Because of #2, huge time savings
4. I can help anyone right from my desk because I can shadow them via
Citrix

Was it hard to implement. Not at all, much easier than rolling out 20 new
workstations.

Hope this helps.

Did Epicor provide any documentation?

I've been purchasing Televideo units for about $299 each for the last 5 years. They just recently sold to another company but I was able to buy 23 units for $5.00 each on ebay. They all came in and work great.

Some big hospital is getting rid of all their units.

I dont use Citrix but went with http://www.propalms.com instead. Much cheaper and does everything I would need Citrix to do.

I love the thin clients. It saves me at least one IT employee. The only thing I am worried about is Vantage 8.0. Currently I am running 25 + vantage clients on each terminal server with dual 2.8Ghz Xeon processors and 4GB ram. If you go by the Vantage 8 specs, I would need 1GB of ram and a 3Ghz processor for each user. It doesn't sound like the architecture of Vantage 8.0 is very thin client friendly. I would love to be proven wrong on this. I think the specs on V8 are just ridiculous.

Thanks
Jeremy

At Electroimpact, the speed improvement on 6.x using Terminal Server is substantial but on 8, negligible. But we'll still use Terminal Server for the 200 people that float in/out sharing 10 licenses.
