Hi all - Is there a comprehensive resource on DMT’ing Serial Numbers into Epicor? We are having all kinds of problems. Problem du jour is our BOM DMT erroring out on Serialized parts referencing the ECOOpr - which I assume points to the BOO. Sample error:
2022-06-13T12:37:46 78307-03001-102 C 78307-03001-002D Table: ECOOpr Msg: Serial Numbers are not allowed for this Part
Serial Numbers are not allowed for this Part
I currently have the “SNRequiredOpr” field set to TRUE for every operation for serialized parts, guessing that’s the problem since the BOM is referencing unserialized material to go into serialized parts, I’m going to take a crack at that.
But meanwhile, it’s whack-a-mole with Serialized parts - a general guide as to how to proceed and what will break what would be invaluable. Thanks!
Your profile says you’re on E10. If you’re familiar with your Demo environment and how to look at the Education Course documents therein, there is one called Serial Tracking that goes through the entire process. Since it appears you’re already using them, you’ve probably got a lot of the setup already done, but it would be worth making sure it’s all setup for everying you want to do.
We assign serial numbers to our parent top level parts (pumps). We do not track lower level serial numbers for child parts. In our processing we do not use the SNRequiredOpr set to true at all. Do you actually need / find value in entering serial numbers for operations at labor entry? Help on operation SNRequiredOpr states:
Serial Numbers Required From This Operation “Triggers a prompt in the End Labor Activity and Labor Entry programs for the serial numbers produced from this operation when you select this check box. Selecting this option also automatically selects the Serial Number Required when Shipping option in the Subcontract Detail sheet of the Engineering Workbench.”
So our processing with serial numbers requires our top level job to get assigned a serial number. This is made necessary due to Part / PartPlant records setup for serial number tracking. When the SN assigned part is moved in inventory or shipped or received, a serial number is required to be entered. However, when an operation is done e.g., assembly, testing, etc, we do not need to enter any serial numbers because we don’t have SNRequiredOpr set to true in any method.
Hi Ernie - I remarkably have never been in our Demo environment, and apparently don’t have a login. For context, I am not a coding/IT person, just the lucky stiff in our company that volunteered to help our transition team move to Epicor from our previous custom ERP that I’ve learned did not follow any of the standard ERP rules. We DO have most of the setup done, and I can manually load SN’s in all day - we’re just trying to have a means of DMT’ing these in, and there just isn’t much documentation out there for that. Another example: I’ve found making the SN Alphanumeric, which you can allegedly load anything in, is still erroring out if we don’t specify how many digits to expect. Which varies. Again for context - these are typically Serial Numbers inherited from either our customer or from forging/casting suppliers, so we are not dictating the formats. That’s just one problem, it’s why I’m hoping for that elusive comprehensive guide - which sounds like it may exist and may just not have access to it.
We do have value in entering SN’s in Labor Entry, but a bit of research seems to indicate the Epicor Serial Number suite to be cumbersome. With that said, it has to be an improvement on the honor system method we currently have in place which is just text fields. Our go live is in August, trying to be as prepared as possible - once we are live I don’t feel we’ll have issues with serialization, it’s DMT’ing info in that is a struggle.
Try using epicor/epicor as the username and password for the Demo environment (that’s the default). Once at the Home screen, click on the “Help” tile, then click on the Education Courses link. Expand Material Management in the tree on the left, click on Serial Number Tracking, and click the Launch button. Click on Before You Begin in the tree on the left, and you should see a link to Printable version of course. THAT is the elusive comprehensive guide (or as comprehensive a guide as is available) you seek!
So a more specific question would be, which DMT program are you using? Are you trying to load the material list for an existing job (this would be using the Job Material DMT)? If so, this error is telling you that the material part you’re loading is not set up as a serial tracked part.
Hi Ernie - I apologize in advance if I’m not answering the right question. I’m using the Bill of Material DMT, which doesn’t reference Serial Numbers in any way. The error is “ECOOpr Msg: Serial Numbers are not allowed for this Part”. My presumption is that “ECOOpr” refers to the Bill of Operations DMT, which could of course be wrong. If that is wrong, right of the bat I have an answer. In the BOO DMT there is a “SNRRequiredOpr” that I have marked as TRUE for those part number/operation that need serialization, but I still get this error. The issue I’m having is the DMT system is vague about what the actual problem is and more importantly, where the issue is. Another example - I’m now trying to simply DMT the serial numbers in via the “Serial Number” DMT. Allegedly only needs Company, PartNum, SerialNumber & Plant to successfully load. Attempting to load returned the error:
Table: SerialNo Msg: The Reference is required.
No idea what “reference” it speaks of. Added SN Format and SN Mask fields, same error. Any help from anybody is appreciated. Thanks!
OK - the “Reference is Required” was fixed by putting dummy info in what is supposed to be an optional field - the SNReference field that is defined as “A generic fill-in field that could be used to allow the user to enter data”. And that broke it. Will do similar experiments on the the other error…
The Bill of Materials and Bill of Operations uploads have nothing to do with serial numbers OTHER THAN the option that certain Operations may require them.
Exactly what serial numbers are you trying to upload? Don’t tell me what DMT you’re using, tell me what actual process you’re trying to accomplish.
