Serial Number Sequencing Question

I am someone can help point me in the right direction. We have a question regarding serial tracking. We would like to be able to issue a global, sequential serial number across all parts vs part number specific but can’t seem to find any company configurations or serial masking that would allow us to do so. When we use lot tracking (Track Lots), the Lots --> Generate tab allows us to make a selection of Non Part Specific which gives us the option to allow the system to assign the next number in sequence available across all parts. This is ideally what we want to do with our serial numbers. However, right now we have to select a mask at every part and the sequencing starts at zero for each part and counts up for that specific part only.

This is what is currently happening:

Part x – serial #1
Part y – serial #1
Part z – serial #1
Part x again – serial #2
Part a – serial #1

This is what we want:
Part x – serial # 1
Part y – serial # 2
Part z – serial # 3
Part x again – serial #4
Part a – serial #5

Thanks for any insight!

Create one mask with its own sequence and assign it to all part numbers.

Do you have screenshots for how exactly this is done? I tried using the same serial mask across different parts and it reused serial numbers. From Application Help…it must be possible if I’m interpreting correctly.

I would like to know how to do this too, we are making ours unique with different prefixes for each part but this would be better.

Interestingly there is no mention of global serial masks in the 2024.2 help.

The screenshot that I shared is from the 2021 application help

I figured out how to do it (at least in the 2021.2 version. Here are some screenshots of my setups. The Starting Sequence field in Serial Mask Maintenance updates as you go, so I didn’t type in “000000020”.

I, too, have never seen a global serial number mask. Since Vantage 8, I’ve created one mask and assigned the same mask to every serialized part that shipped. One warning, and I’m not sure if this is true or not, but when the mask counter overflowed, it is was done and we had to create a new mask and assign it to the parts again. Be prepared or use a really large number for the counter.

Works a treat.

Found this first, and came back to help, but I see you figured it out.

@aosemwengie1 is happy as a clam as well.
