1). Because we have had so many issues with V8, I don't particularly
care about the licensing issue - especially when I am told by Epicor to
test it out before I deploy it.
2). We did our own install, even though we had Ben from Epicor do the
Production System install - this way, if we have an issue with our live
system, it will be on Vantage's shoulders.
3). We use copies of our live data. We backup every night, and then
import a backed up database to the test system whenever needed.
4). Well, most everything is the same, except for the server name and
client. We only use a client on the test server. I don't want to fuss
with the config files nor change too many port numbers. Hardware is
very different.
4b). We try to run a few functions such as printing reports, security
(individual and menu), basic getting into menus, etc. Because our
company is very small, it is difficult to get everyone to hammer on the
test server all the functions required by each department. I would like
to formalize this procedure, and I believe it is vital, but we don't
have all the resources to do that. You have an excellent point here and
I would love to see what others do. I do have offline conversations
with others who are implementing V8.
5). We are mostly concerned about functionality, but performance should
be considered here. We "test" on a glorified PC (single processor, only
2G RAM, IDE drives, etc.), but only 1-3 people at a time try it out - so
it isn't production worthy. However, we can detect some issues on the
test system. Each patch does improve things, but experience has also
taught us that it breaks other things also. We have now decided to wait
for about 4 or 5 hotfixes before we implement the next rev level in a
patch. We do patches on a Thursday night so that we have 1 work day to
test things. If we believe it is unusable, we at least have the weekend
to back out so we don't lose too many work days, but we still get at
least 1 work day to test the worthiness of the patch.

Subject: [Vantage] Setting up a test environment
Hello,
I have heard several times where people on this group have setup a test
server where they can make sure that patches and service packs work
before installing them on their production servers.
I would like to do this but I had a several questions for this group.
1) Does the Vantage8/Progress10 license allow a client to install the
software on two different machines?
2) Is it possible to install Vantage8 w/Progress10 with out having
someone from Epicor doing it? We had someone come in to install the
software for our server.
3) What do you use for data in the test environment?
4) How do you make sure both environments are setup identically?
4) How do you perform your testing? Are there certain things that you
test to make sure the system is functional? Does anyone have a testing
procedure they could share?
5) Are there other things to take into consideration when setting up a
test environment?
Thanks,
Joe Rojas
