Hi All,

How do you handle Vantage training and familiarization for new
employees? We have several people that have little or no Vantage
experience or are new to the company.

We're looking into on-site training from Epicor or outside consultants. So
far, Epicor hasn't returned a call. If anyone has personal recommendations
for any of the consulting groups, could you please share them? Or if you
are in the biz, drop me a line off the the list?

We're looking for basics on the production modules for 6 or 8 people, plus
in depth training on Visual Scheduling and other scheduling and capacity
planning functions for 3 or 4 people.

Epicor is about to launch an on-line training program, so all you need is a
connection to the internet and a speaker phone to attend the sessions. They
are not full day sessions like the others, but most new users can't take
more than a couple of hours of training and continue to absorb anyhow. I
have done several of the "sales" type sessions on the internet for intros to
new modules and so on and it works very well. If you replace a key person
(accountant, Production Manager, Scheduler, planner) then I would still
suggest that you send them to one of Epicor's classes (see schedule and
locations on the web site-too bad they don't pay me for this!). When our
new accountant started we let her explore Vantage for a few weeks, learn
about our weird ways, then sent her to controller's workshop, it really
helped.

Also, part of my job is to assist in the training and re-training of
employees in the use of Vantage, especially after upgrades or additions of
new modules.

Wayne,

If we have only one or two people to train, we will have the people use
the tutorial along with the training database provided by Epicor. We
have cross-trained key office support personnel to help fill in for
illnesses and to help train when we have a new person.

We found that on site training was better, we paid one price and we
could train several disciplines at different time frames during a two
day period. When we had more to train we brought in the local territory
consultant for general training, but be sure to verify they are good
trainers first. We had training several times and found that the two
day training was good, because we always found more questions on the
second day.

When we needed specialized training, such as in-depth training on Visual
Scheduling, we sought out Epicor's expert in this area. In this case we
were able to get Steve Wieland to spend two days with us last September
12th and 13th. Steve was an instructor specializing in scheduling
before moving up in the training organization. He did an outstanding
job for us including brining us up to speed of what we could expect in
5.0. Steve said they liked getting out once in awhile to interface with
the users. I hope Steve is still with them. His e-mail address is
SWieland@... <mailto:Swieland@Epicor> .

Hope this helps,

Steve A. Wirtz

Here goes a nice stupid question... So, what if I wanted to train
several people at the same time with the "self-paced courses"? With
the training database setup, wouldn't they be manipulating the same
data, at the same time? How does Epicor do it at their training
facilities?

George
Virtual machines. Do the training, reload the image.

Not a stupid question at all George. In fact, we had Epicor do Knowledge Cramp
at our place and we ran into all kinds of trouble.

I would get a copy of VM Workstation and setup individual virtual machines and
use the VMPlayer on each workstation. When it's time for a new class, just
restore the original machine files.

For onsite training, Epicor typically recommends Train1-6 so each person or group gets their own database. There's a utility to set these databases up... contact Epicor Support.

However, if all users use manager/manager and all databases point to mfgsysdata for reports, they step on each other's reports. So use a different signon in each database or use unique directories in the System Agent. This is what we've done for Live/Test/Pilot etc.
