We are on version 3.0 and actually had that happen. A user who thought he
was cleaning up his hard drive was deleting vantage information. We had to
reinstall Vantage on the server. That's when I found out that we had no
backup that included the ud folder. We were told that on version 3.0 you
have no way of preventing this from happening, but that future versions of
Vantage could be set up so that users could no longer get access to Vantage
info. Can anyone confirm this information?

Heading out for Vacation soon. I'm the only IT person here. How do I set
up a workstation to run ProMon so people won't have to log onto the server
to run it? I'd rather not have them in there if I can help it.

I believe promon has to be ran from the server.

I use Laplink to remote control my server from my workstation so I don't
have to get up and go in there.

We use VNC for remote access to the server, which works well. However, if
I'm reading this correctly, you don't want to give them administrator access
on the server at all?

I wonder if you can give one of your user's accounts "user" rights on the
server and only give them limited rights to the Promon program on the
desktop? Not sure how well that would work. Guess it depends on what level
of access you are comfortable with them having.

The Progress Explorer Tool can be run from a workstation, but you can't kill individual licenses that way if that's what you're looking for.

Yep Troy, I want them to be able to free locked data collection licenses.
And yep Brian, I don't want anybody to have admin rights to the server,
except the designated emergency-handling person.

Maybe I should have phrased it differently. I'll be gone for 2 weeks on
vacation. I'm the only IT person here. I don't want to have to come back
to Ohio from Arizona to fix a problem. At the same time, I want to minimize
the danger of someone causing a big problem on the server by doing the wrong
thing.

The consultant I use lives in Toronto. I communicate with him via phone and
email - and he has dialup capability. He is available most of the time.
And he could assist in the big network prolems if they occur.

But I need someone on this end to be able to press a few buttons when a
vantage data collection session is locked up, without bringing down the
whole network. I'm trying to make it as foolproof as possible, that's all.

Vantage tech support confirmed - you must be on a server to do this in
ProMon. Won't work from workstations in Vantage 4.0. I don't know about
other versions.

Thanks,
Gary

I'm working on that now. I haven't done it before, but it'll be good
learning experience for me. Vantage tech support tells me that in order for
the user to run promon on the server, they need access to the entire Epicor
folder and subfolders. I don't like that, but that's how it'll have to be,
I guess. This whole area of user permissions is very subjective. Everybody
has their own idea of how it should be done. I'll figure something out.

Epicor has a document on securing these folders with NTFS permissions. It
is page:546MPS. I have used this on my Vantage 5.1 installation and it
seems to be working out well.

back
to Ohio from Arizona to fix a problem. At the same time, I want to
minimize
the danger of someone causing a big problem on the server by doing the
wrong
thing.

The consultant I use lives in Toronto. I communicate with him via phone
and
email - and he has dialup capability. He is available most of the time.
And he could assist in the big network prolems if they occur.

But I need someone on this end to be able to press a few buttons when a
vantage data collection session is locked up, without bringing down the
whole network. I'm trying to make it as foolproof as possible, that's
all.

Vantage tech support confirmed - you must be on a server to do this in
ProMon. Won't work from workstations in Vantage 4.0. I don't know
about
other versions.

Thanks,
Gary

The Progress Explorer Tool can be run from a workstation, but you can't
kill
individual licenses that way if that's what you're looking for.

Heading out for Vacation soon. I'm the only IT person here. How do I
set
up a workstation to run ProMon so people won't have to log onto the
server
to run it? I'd rather not have them in there if I can help it.

No one NEEDS write access to that for Vantage to run. You're opening
yourself to a big risk there. I'd suggest changing the permissions to
read-only ASAP!

Some folks have even suggested moving your .DB file out of the Vantage\db
directory to somewhere that it's not even accessible via the shared
directory. That's a little extreme, but it would give you extra protection
if the permissions got changed during an install or something.
