5.1 Promon

Matt,

After a while using promon, there is the possibility that the user name will
disappear from the screen. The connection is listed, yet no user is
associated with it. Epicor has this listed as an issue, but I am not sure
how it is categorized.

If your user names disappeared, you could:

1. Use the System Configuration/Utilities/Connected Users to view the
connection number and disconnect the user using promon.
2. Rename and modify your .vtg file to point your physical drive, run a
client session of Vantage using the modified .vtg file from the server and
disconnect the user using the utility in Vantage (suggested by Epicor).

I updated over the holidays to 5.1 and I have not tried the second one yet.

Has anybody experienced this problem using promon and 5.1?

Yes, Yes and yes! I got these instructions from tech support this
morning-had 5.1 running for one whole hour when I needed to kill a user in
ProMon. This is long, but worth having.

Does anyone know if Promon can be used with 5.1 and
can I simply edit the 5.0 shortcut to the new 5.1 location.

I'm too chicken to just try it.

Matt,

During the Progress Install, if you chose the "Standard" install, I don't believe the Promon will be installed properly. If you chose a custom or full install, then all of the items for using Procontrol will be installed. Once installed, there will be a Procontrol icon in your Control Panel of the Server workstation. If you have 5.0 and 5.1 both installed, then when you double-click Procontrol it will ask you to choose either Progress 9.1A or 9.1C. After picking 9.1C, you can set up your 5.1 database by putting the same parameters that you used in 5.0, with the exception that your path names will all point to the Epic51 path for Vantage and Progess.

In answer to your specific question, I think you might be able to edit the shortcut to the new location, but you'll still have to enter the new paths in ProControl for the 5.1 database. The nice thing about editing the shortcut on your desktop -- it will directly open the 9.1C Procontrol instead of prompting you as to whether to open the 9.1A or the 9.1C procontrol.

Worse thing that could happen is that your database won't work and you'll have to try something else.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions.

PROMON NEEDS TO BE SETUP ON THE SERVER
Progress Monitor (PROMON), which is available on version 8.1a DB server or
higher for NT, displays performance and usage information about database
status and activity. This utility also allows you to disconnect individual
users.
NOTE: PROMON is only available for shared-memory versions of Progress, UNIX,
NT, OS/2, and VMS. It is NOT available for Novell. PROMON can be invoked at
the DOS prompt or invoked through a Windows icon. Since PROMON is a DOS
based utility, before you can use it, you must first perform the following
steps:

===============
PROMON SETUP
===============
1. Open ProControl.
2. Click the Detail button.
3. Click the Environment tab at the top of the window.
4. Verify in the center box that there is an environment setting ACCESS=all.
If not, at the bottom of the screen under 'Variable' add the word ACCESS in
uppercase. Below that add the Value all (This must be entered in lowercase).
5. Click the Set button, then click OK. If the Promon icon(s) below do not
function, stop ProControl and then restart. You should now be able to start
your utility from the DOS prompt or icon.

===============
STARTING PROMON
===============
From the DOS Prompt
1. At the server, open a DOS session.
2. Change directory to:
c:\epic51\progress\bin (5.1)

3. Enter:
promon c:\epic51\vantage\db\vantage.db (5.10)

From Windows Icon (Version 5.10)
Creating a Vantage PROMON Icon
Target: C:\epic51\Progress\bin\_mprshut.exe -0 C:\epic51\vantage\db\vantage
Startin: C:\epic51\prowork
Matt,
I guess I misunderstood your question. I was thinking Procontrol instead of Promon. Looks like Lydia has an more accurate answer for you.

We are talking the figurative, progress/vantage type kill, right? Not
literal. It has been quite an adventure.
