Shop floor data collection / Real-time piece reporting

We are currently using shop floor data collection with touch screens. The hardware is more expensive however, you enable your employees to retrieve much more information from within Vantage. For example, with the shop floor software and a touch screen employees can perform functions such as requesting material, looking up job status, verifying labor transactions, creating move tickets and much more. With the other option which is the keypad terminal you are restricted to two lines of data for input and output.
I would definitely recommend going with the touch screen option.

In regards to data collection as a whole, if you are not currently using this I would highly recommend it. This eliminates the need for manual data entry and gives you real time access to what is happening on the shop floor. Once the user community sees how easy it is to perform they will be glad to stop the manual recording of data.

One final comment is that Vantage is equipped with several alerts that will warn you if data is not being recorded properly or based on your criteria which will help during the learning phase.

Subject: [Vantage] Shop floor data collection / Real-time piece reporting

My company is currently looking at going to shop floor data collection
and real time piece reporting. Are there any Vantage users out there
that currently do this, or have done this in the past. What are the
pro's/con's? What data collection software are you using? What about
touch screens compared to the use of keyboards?

Please email me offline with any comments you have about this issue.

We use Vantage 6.10 Plant Floor for data collection. It works fine as long
as you can get your employees to record their time and quantities correctly.
We just use keyboard and mouse setup. We did bar code the job, sequence and
operation for the job traveler. Just stick a keyboard wedge in and their
starting activity on jobs in a matter of seconds.

The pros are real time reporting. You can look and see where a job is in
the shop and who is working on it, etc.

The same cons as any other time reporting tool. You have to get the
cooperation of the guys in the shop. Garbage in garbage out.

Clocking in and out is usually not a problem, Vantage is very flexable with
shifts, grace periods for clock in and out etc. Employees moving shifts
temporaraly can handle that without problem. Overall data collection treats
us good. It feeds into the Payroll module easily. We have one person that
does payroll. It takes her about 5 to 7 hours total to get about 235 people
payed.

FYI
