Shop Floor Labor Collection - v6.1

A simple barcode scanner and an employee badge can automate the process
completely (single swipe of card in front of the scanner and it can enter
the id, and the keystrokes to log them in). It can be a 3 second process
and touchless.
You still use the shop floor interface just add a <$200 scanner and make
some badges and set it near the door.

I was not suggesting that we use 2 systems ... merely asking the question
... besides the normal Vantage interface (log in, clock in, start activity
etc) is their a way that a card swipe machine will perform the function of
"Clocking the employee in".

For example, Jimmy Joe walks through the shop floor and "swipes in" (clocks
in) (using a card swiper that interfaces with Vantage) that he is here at
7:00am in the morning. Then he gets his cup of coffee, reads the newspaper,
chats about Bob Huggins staying a couple more years, etc and gets to his
work station at 7:45am where he then "logs in and starts activity" using the
Vantage interface.

The question stems from the fact that the Vantage interface appears
cumbersome to use if all we want them to do is Clock in/out at the beginning
and end of the day. We plan on using the Vantage interface at their
workstation to start/stop activity.

I hope this clarifies.

For the sake of sanity I would recommend using one system. It is really
very little extra effort to clock-in to Vantage then onto a job. We use bar
code readers and the employees scan their EmpID from a sheet at the PC.
Optionally they also scan the Job Traveler bar codes. Someday we will do
badges with pictures and barcodes. Having all the data in one system and
adding up will save a lot of headaches. Keeping multiple time references in
synch is almost impossible. The last place I was at used Kronos card
swipers and a seperate system for job times and they never matched - $ or
hours. If you are using Vantage payroll you would really want the payroll
clockings to be form Vantage. If you have other issues related to shift
start/stop time like AWOL or tardy and some sort of enforcement you REALLY
want them all on the same system or else employee are going to start
arbitraging the slight differences between systems.

Does anyone use a "card swipe" type machine to collect labor on your shop
floor?

We are wanting to collect labor information from our shop floor and are
going to use the standard Vantage interface to collect "Job related" entries
... ie, Starting Activity & End Activity.

With our current system, we don't have the capability to job cost our shop
floor labor to a job but we use a "card swipe" type machine to Clock in and
Clock out ... for payroll. Swipe your card and it records the time that you
clocked in/out.

Is there a way to use the "card swipe" type machine to Clock in/out to
record payroll information that will interface into Vantage? Or do we have
to use the same interface that we will be using to record "Start
activity/End activity"?
