Shutting Down

LD,

Take a look at our web site, www.crestview-aerospace.com . Maybe we have an
opening in finance. We can't hire fast enough, 10 to 20 people a week. We
have very large contracts with facilities in Crestview, FL and our new start
up in Fairhope, AL.
Vantage experienced personnel is a valuable asset.

I'm the controller for Falcon Plastics in Washington Pa. We are closing
operations by the end of this year. We have already stopped production. We
are using Vantage 3.0, that's all we could afford to upgrade to. We ran a
standard cost system that worked very well for us. We just did not have a
good sales system. This board has been very good with info. Just reading
other peoples problems you learn a lot. If anybody in the Pittsburgh area is
looking for a person that uses Vantage or is into standard please e-mail me
offline. Thanks and good luck to all mfg's. It's a tough world out there..

Does anybody have a problem with Vantage 5.0 shutting down at night when backvan.bat is running?

No but if I did, I would first check to make sure I am running the backup in
"online" mode. I don't suppose it could be that straight forward?

How much free space do you have? If you fill up all the disk space on the
partition you're dumping the image to, the DB will hang. (BTDT)

If your full Server backup (ie. tape drive backup) tries to backup the epic50\vantage\db folder, that will shut down Vantage as well. It's not exactly what you're asking, but might be another avenue to check.

I am very sorry to hear of your job loss!

The Bush administration seems oblivious to the manufacturing (Made in the

are in a guillotine, just waiting every day for someone to flip the release.

Sorry too to hear about your job loss. I work in Grand Rapids...home to
Delphi. Yesterday the production workers at Delphi walked off the job
because Delphi is giving $500 Million dollars worth of bonuses to white
collar employees while asking the production workers to take a 60% pay
cut.

I just read that the average CEO of Fortune 500 companies makes $431.00
per every $1.00 made by it's production staff. That is what is wrong
with America. Goodbye middle class. You will either be ultra rich or
ultra poor....which way are you going to go?

Hang in there L.D. It's never pleasant to see a manufacturer go down but these things are cyclical. If the success of Epicor at selling systems is any gauge it would appear there actually are strong and growing manufacturers out there still willing to invest in technology. Economy, market, competition and management skills all play roles in which survive and which don't or are absorbed by the survivors. Been there a couple times when the water was coming over the railing. Only common thread was inept management but the root triggers were night and day different in each case. There are still opportunities out there in companies that are rooted in skills and brainpower. Locally here in Minnesota the tech schools can't pump out trained CNC Mill operators fast enough. Somebody is certainly manufacturing still.

As for pay disparity.....I think this too is cyclical. Usually a sign of major economic change. I have tried but can not find a chart of the spread from top to bottom in pay versus the economy (GDP change perhaps). I suspect it would revel that after times of turmoil (such as the .com crash) there are plenty of sinking ships and CEOs are demanding huge sums to either attempt to fix them or accept a temporary position (and black mark on their career) to scuttle them. Perverse irony them getting paid a premium while the actions they take at the other end only widen the gap - all the while Wall Street applauds the pay cuts and lay offs thus jacking up the stock options value widening the pay gap even more. Another factor...401(k) and IRA bloated funds who are the real owners but don't demand performance and governance. Anyone with a retirement account should be concerned about this disconnect. A tidbit I dug up from a web site: "compare S&P 500 returns since 1990 of a $10,000 initial investment to those of an equal portfolio invested every year in the company of the highest-paid CEO. The former portfolio would have risen to $48,350 by the end of 2004, six times the returns of the "Greedy CEO" portfolio, which would have fallen to $8,079." Oddly the pay gap really took off at about the same time as the establishment of IRAs and the rise of mutual funds. Once the fund managers find out the best thing they can do for their own performance is intelligently vote their proxies for mindful directors this will change.

But there are rays of hope....occasionally you hear of a corporation with a limit on the gap. I think I saw that Whole Foods Markets has a cap on CEO salary of 14 times the lowest paid employee. Best Buy's CEO recently gave 200,000 shares of stock options to outstanding non-management employees as performance awards. Company's that take care of their people survive. One reason why I think this gap thing is cyclical and will swing the other way making it easier for manufacturers in the U.S. (and other countries competing with low cost labor) to survive and thrive.
