Question for anyone owning/using ProVision. I'm considering buying the
Vantage source code and a seat of ProVision.
1. Did you have difficulty learning how ProVision works?
2. In your opinion, would it be difficult for a programmer-by-trade to get
up to speed on it?
3. How manageable is the Vantage source code?
4. To what other programming tools is ProVision similar?

Thans.

Our company has been working with Progress for 15 years. It is a relational
database and 4gl language that is extremely powerful. Similar to Oracle ,
Sybase, etc.

Most ERP packages source code contains a lot of "calls" and includes that
sometime make it difficult to follow. My rule of thumb is you will need one
year to really learn Progress (full time) and then additional time to
understand Vantage source code.

You should always consider what you want to modify as modifications are
going to make it difficult if not impossible to continue to be current with
Vantage.

What in particular are you thinking of changing?

Terry,
I answered these questions in detail about a month or so ago - try searching
the eGroups archives.
Here are the short answers to your questions:
1. No, its relatively easy as long as you are familiar with event-driven
programming.
2. No, as long as you invest the time/money in Progress training.
3. Reasonably manageable.
4. Visual Basic.
One caveat: while the language is relatively easy to learn, there are any
number of "little things" that can bite you in the butt. That's why the
classes and active membership in a Progress User Group are so important.
