Use the wizard to create an EpiViewNotification event for the dataview
that will have the date01 field updated if you do not have one already.
add this code to the event:

If (args.NotifyType = EpiTransaction.NotifyType.Initialize) Then
If (args.Row > -1) Then
If IsDBNull(view.dataView(args.Row)("Date01")) Then
view.dataView(args.Row)("Date01") = Today
End If
End If
End If

Didnt even think about that.

Yeah, I'd like for it to be filled with Sept 24 2007. Once the record is
saved, that field needs to stay Sept 24 2007.

I guess what it needs to be that once a new parent is created, the
date01 field will contain the current date.

So this date field gets filled with Sept 24 2007 today and someone calls
up that same record on Wednesday, does the date stay 9/24/2007 or does
it get changed to 9/26/2007 ??

How do I get a "Date01" field to be filled with the current day's date
every time the form is opened?

I do something like this to default other VB Form fields when they are empty using a .P routine that runs on form load.
Not a date field but a sample (in 6.1 anyway) that might help would be:
-----------------------------
Define Variable POLineVar as Int.
Define Variable PORelVar as Int.

/* INCLUDE vbp/vb.i SO THAT VantageBasic FUNCTIONS ARE AVAILABLE. */
{M:\mfgsys61\vbp/vb.i}
POLineVar = getDecimalValue("POLine.scrvalue").
PORelVar = getDecimalValue("PORel.scrvalue").

if POLineVar = 0 then Do:
setDecimalValue("POLine.scrvalue":U,1.0).
End.
if PORelVar = 0 then Do:
setDecimalValue("PORel.scrvalue":U,1.0).
End.
RETURN.
-------------------------------
Which sets the PO line and release fields on a subcontract packing slip to be 1...if not already set. Testing for a date already there you might try if it is greater than some base date because I think no date would be lower than any other date.
The procedure call for the form looks like:

RUNPROG m:\mfgsys61\vbp\SubShipDefaults.P.

Anwyay, perhaps an approach to try.
