Upgrade to 9.05.700+ Pros & Cons

Wow - next few weeks is a tough one... We tested various levels of 60x extensively, but from patch to patch things had to be completely retested. We would find some things fixed but others broken that you wouldn't have expected.

We wanted to go live at the most current level to hopefully carry us through a little further with being able to get retro fixes. I tried to keep good notes about what was tested / worked at each level but it got very confusing. We went live on 607b2 4/2/2012. If we didn't have at least 6 or so one-offs from the 700 patch retrofitted to 607b2 we wouldn't have been able to function. Every business runs differently, if you think you can test enough to be comfortable in 3 weeks more power to you!

We are in the middle of implementation and are struggling with several bugs that are reported to be fixed in the 700 or better patches. We are Multicompany and it's doubtful that we will have another window after our Go Live until next July so we are strongly considering upgrading in the next few weeks. Can anyone provide any feedback on their experiance with 9.05.700+ upgrade process or any good or bad experiances with the release?

Thanks!

We were in a similar situation where we went live on 9.04.507A last year
even though 9.05 was already out.

The rational was that we had already done some much work in 9.04 that is
was tough to imagine going through it again with 9.05. Plus there was
mounting pressure to go live because the implementation was taking a
very long time.

In hindsight, I should have dug my heels in and demanded that we convert
to 9.05 before going live.

Not only is the performance of 9.04 terrible, which we didn't really
know until we went live, but every time we call with an issue, we are
told that it was fixed in 9.05 and we are not always successful with
getting retro fixes, especially for performance issue.

The major lesson learned was to always go live on the latest version,
within reason.

The major benefit of doing this is that fixes and one offs are more
likely delivered in a timely fashion and it takes away the Epicor
respond of "Upgrading to the latest version will fix that".

If you have a well documented testing script, you should be able to get
through testing the latest version.

If you are already on a version of 9.05 then it should be even easier.

As for the upgrade process, we are testing 9.05.700 now and overall the
upgrade process went pretty smooth.

My biggest issues is that it took days to complete the conversion
process. I'm working with Epicor to figure out why because when we
cutover to 700, I'll only have a weekend to do it.

We were in the same place and decided to go from 605 to 700A, then 700B when we were told we could no longer get one-offs for 605. 700A has a problem with not finding customizations, so we went to B when it came out.

As we are verifying processes and customizations anyway, it seemed better now than later. The upgrade went fine. The schema update did take 6+ hours to run. We are SQL 64bit. There were issues that another member had on the SQL 32bit with the schema update.

Our testing is not complete, but we have found most of our issues were corrected with the upgrade.

Hi Joe,
We also went live on 9.04.507A (from Vantage 6.1) on 1/2/2012.
We also had been in a long implementation, about 2 years!

What steps (versions) are you going thru in your upgrade testing?

Are you using the upgrade utility?

By the way, sure hate I missed meeting you in Vegas, maybe this year.

Thanks,
Jim Moore

We are also in the middle of Quick Launch Implementation with go live on August 1st. Our Epicor consultant told us to update to the latest 905.700b2 because of the tremendous amount of fixes over 905.607b.
I finished the update to the databases just 12 hours before our Conference room Pilot.
Just make sure your servers have at least 40gb of ram for the SQL server and if you have a separate Epicor server 40gb on there also.
So far this week is a great experience with 905.700!
Good Luck!
