Upgrading 6.0 to 6.1

----------------------------------------------------------------------
PS, If you want a support weekend, use this list to generate a "user"
upgrade weekend. With the resources of this list, you should be able to
get enough companies planning a specific weekend that Epicor will pay
attention. If support gets a call from a number of companies that are
planning the upgrade on a given weekend, you should be able to get them
to play the game your way. Good luck.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Heck of an idea there! Well.... I've always felt that support weekends should be in mid-month (not at pre-M.E. sales crunch and not post-M.E. reporting period). So I would vote for the 17th. If anyone else was planning on upgrading in July and wants to gang up on that weekend we can maybe have enough people monitoring their email for mututal support perhaps without Epicor's help. I will forever be greatful to Ted Kitch for being on-line at 11pm (here) one Friday night a couple years ago at the start of my 4.0 to 5.2 conversion and providing an exact solution to a show-stopper problem (wrong version of MDAC on server).

So who wants to join me on the 17th?

-Todd C.

I am trying to plan our upgrade from 6.0 to 6.1. I had wanted to do it on the next available "support weekend" but am now told there won't be any more before 8.0 (Sonoma) is released (October ?). I have never had a successful version upgrade without at least one error message or glitch requiring support's assistance.

Even though 6.0 to 6.1 is relatively minor (and we don't have CRM) I am still a little concerned. I could do a test upgrade but if it works I would have to do it all again so it seems better to make just try it one weekend and if it works, great, if not then get help before the next weekend and try again. Meaning I have to block out two summer weekends just in case I have a problem along the way the first time.

Anyone with experience are there any known "gotchas" I can be prepared for and maybe get it done on the first try?

Thanks,
Todd Caughey

PS - {Soapbox time] - With patches extremely limited in 6.0 and prior and Epicor encouraging people to get to 6.1 as soon as possible to be ready to eventually go to 8.0 I find it a bit odd for them to not be there to help customers along. Folks on 4.0 thru 5.2 will be facing a lot of potential issues trying to go it alone before support weekends resume. I feel that support for upgrades is a big part of what we pay for our maintenance agreement.

6.0 to 6.1 was the smoothest upgrade I have done. There was 0 issues and it didn't take very long at all.

5.20.324 and 6.00.524

Our db is just over 611mb. And just this phase took over 2 hours. I think
6.0 to 6.1 took just over a 1/2 hour - 45 min.

I'm not sure why but my test ran much quicker that actual and it was a copy
of our db. My guess is one of the recent patches and the obvious point that
it was the weekend.

Todd,
We installed 6.1 on the server (uses the same share, progress and all).
We ran the 6.1 on a few client systems for test and did the upgrade (DB
only) several days during the day to test (restore the last backup to
alternate location, upgrade that location). The upgrade took under an
hour for us. The frustration was installing each of the clients, though
this can be done ahead as well. (leave the 6.1 db off and tell users,
Monday you will start with this new icon).
This process also allows you to convert reports early, transfer any UD
and Userforms to the new directory and verify all your custom Crystal
forms. The initial install should be done in off hours but, all in all,
this is a snap of an upgrade.
Good luck,
Aaron Hoyt
