Support wants a copy of our db because they can not duplicate an issue we are having with purchase advisor on their sanitized demo data.

I have tried several times over the past couple weeks to ftp our compressed db to their incoming folder. every time the connection seems to be capped speed wise and drops unexpectedly. once that happens you can not retry the transfer because the file name exists within the folder and you the uploader have no permissions to resume the upload.

now I appreciate the security implications of not being able to access any files in the folder but let me finish the blasted upload!!!
</rant>

Anyone else have problems with disconnects when uploading ?
I have uploaded our database numerous times without any issues.

You might have some kind of throttling on your ISP connection at the
office. Perhaps you can copy the compressed db to a USB stick, bring it
home and upload it with your home connection (DSL or cable, hopefully).
Sometimes I've done that with the MS server ISOs, they download much
quicker on my cable connection than they do on the T1 at work.

Also, if you're not using it already, give FileZilla a try
(http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=client). The client has
a resume feature (as long as the server supports it).

have a great weekend,
john

I've had the same problem. Our compressed db is still over 500MB, and it can take over 3 hours to upload when there is a problem. The only "solution" so far is to keep trying... and just rename it each time. I also try different FTP clients to see if that makes a difference, and I can't say that it does. Eventually it will get there. Once it was such a problem (no joy for 4 or 5 days and uncounted tries) I put it on MY FTP site and made THEM upload it.

I've had the exact same problem. Thanks for letting me know about
renaming the file. The last time we tried this, after a few weeks, we
just gave up.

I have run into this problem occasionally and there are a couple solutions.

1- Upload the same file with a new name
2- Contact someone, tell them about the failed upload, and they can delete the
failed attempt
3- Own your own FTP or webserver, tell Epicor about your multiple failed
attempts and then let them download it from you with the link you give them to
either your FTP or website.

Or you could do it the old fashion way, put in on a CD or DVD and snail mail it to them. Beats banging your head against a wall for a week trying to upload it. I haven't uploaded our database in a while, but in the past when I had to I didn't have a problem. It just took a few hours (3-4) over a T1 and our database was over a gig.

I've used FileZilla to do the uploads a few times and have never had a problem. I would not use IE as an FTP client.

Agreed, IE makes a poor FTP client. I Use Windows Explorer which is OK, but at dedicated FTP client is usually the best way to go.

On a side note, if you ever need to automate FTP scripts, ScriptFTP is an excellent program (http://www.scriptftp.com/). I use it for our EDI clients that use direct FTP transfers. You can create and schedule FTP transfers and the its reasonably priced.

I tried windows explorer and a 'real' ftp client - I must have angered the ftp gods because I can't ftp anything to the incoming folder now......

I was going to upload from remote office which has different T1 provider but no dice.

I was however able to move file from one office to the other without incident in around 2 hours at 68K - best I can do to ftpmpls is 14K

so I am thinking problem is NOT at my end

No, there are definite problems on the Epicor side, the server they use for
that FTP is painfully low on resources, both in storage space as well as
processing and network speed.

When I need to send our DB to Epicor I burn a CD/DVD and mail it. I refuse to waste anymore time on FTP.

Peter
This is nothing new.

I have been complaining to Epicor about this problem for YEARS.

Their bandwidth for ANY connection from the internet is inexcusably slow.

Their FTP site also has very limited storage and they do a poor job of cleaning up these failed file transfer attempts, thus agrivating the problem because future uploads are dropped when they run out of space (OFTEN).

Their file download site is also dog slow and has a nasty habit of dropping connection. Seriously, have you looked at the download speeds ? It doesn't matter what time of day or night, it is ALWAYS slow.

Their Online Education site is dog slow as well.

I also use filezilla FTP client but that doesn't help much when their side drops the connection and won't allow the same filename to continue.

In their defense, how can you expect a small company like Epicor to have a decent network connection, after all they rarely have any of their customers wanting to connect or upload/download files. (Extreme Sarcasm)

This is just another example of how Epicor repeatedly ignores input from it's customers and takes no action to correct problems. I think it is obvious they simply don't care.

***** Whew, that felt good but will result in NO changes *****
