Vantage - Epicor want a copy of our data

This is a fairly common part of the process with Epicor. It is done hundreds
of times a year for various reasons. Upgrades, mass imports,
troubleshooting, and other various service requests.

I am not sure what the government officials with laptops has to do with it,
but Epicor has several servers setup where they will put your DB, they are
internal only and are only accessed within their network.

They are not concerned with your actual data, only in getting your system to
work.

Vantage is a unique product due to the vast amount of customization that can
be done by the end user, and putting your DB onto their servers which are
assumed to be setup "perfectly" in a static environment, they can better
determine where the problem might be.

If they can re-create the problem then it is either a definite problem with
their program, or your data. If the problem cannot be re-created then it
points to your specific system being the problem, and they can then start to
find the problem by comparing differences between your system and their
"perfect" systems.

They have no need to and don't really care about your data other than making
sure it's not corrupt, and thus not the problem. Your DB is scrubbed off the
system once your problem has been solved and they no longer need it.

Hi All,

Epicor have requested that we FTP them a copy of ALL of our data to them for them to keep so that they can use it for support issues and can re-create bugs in it.

Have any one you ever had to send your entire database to Epicor?

In the last 28 years of trading, we have never had to send our data off-site to our legacy system providers for them to fault find. It has always been either done remotely or on-site.

I would be interested to hear your views.

It does make us nervous considering government officials can leave their laptops and CDs on the tube in London with hundreds of thousands of people's private details on.

Thanks.

They have much more tools that can help discover and resolve issues.
Plus if there is a "one off" required, they can design and test it using
your data. That can't be done with a webex.

Hi All,

Epicor have requested that we FTP them a copy of ALL of our data to them
for them to keep so that they can use it for support issues and can

Have any one you ever had to send your entire database to Epicor?

In the last 28 years of trading, we have never had to send our data

always been either done remotely or on-site.

I would be interested to hear your views.

It does make us nervous considering government officials can leave their
laptops and CDs on the tube in London with hundreds of thousands of
people's private details on.

Thanks.

They have been known to do it for a few years now.

Standard practice when they can't reproduce the issue in a web ex
session or when there is a lot involved....especially set up issues.

If you are worried about privacy issues, then have that discussion with
them to ensure your privacy.

I've done it a number of times. There is only so much they can do with a remote session. With your database they can determine if:
1.   The problem is database corruption.
2.   The problem is cause by some unique combination of settings and data in your database they haven't seen before.
3.   The problem lies outside of your database. i.e. something to do with your network or server configuration, hardware platform, or the combination of operating systems and software you have installed.
