Use of Business Categories

Does anyone have any guidance / best practices for the use of the “Business Category” field? One of our staff is asking about a customer flag to identify if a customer is part of a specific industry buying group. I feel that using Attributes is probably more appropriate, but using Business Category has also come up as a possible option. It is used in numerous areas within the system, and this seems like a much narrower use case than what it is intended for.

I have the same question myself. Specifically, I’m trying to find the best practice for use of Business Categories, Sales Categories, and Customer Attributes.

Business Category and Attribute are similar functionalities in Epicor. You can create whatever values you want in these two areas, and then assign those values to customers or suppliers for your own internal reporting purposes.

Generally speaking, I will use IRS Business Activity Codes in the Business Categories, and things like “UL Approved”, “ISO 9001 Certified”, and other types of approvals/certifications in the Attributes. Attributes can be used in the RFQ process for the Supplier Wizard.

Sales Categories are a different beast altogether, as you can assign GL Control Codes here to alter the flow of how sales orders progress through your GL. There is probably some good detail in the System Help on this functionality, but likely less so for the other two as there isn’t any real system logic defined for them.
