V5.1 to V5.2 <Upgrade Question>

Dick,
Potentially, you could do just about everything in advance. You can install the progress and vantage directories and software (may require a reboot once for progress). Then you can do a live backup of your old database, restore to your Epic52/vantage/db directory, do the schema changes (single-user mode is best), and do the data conversions. All while your LIVE database is running.
You can install clients on as many machines as you want. I have never noticed much performance hit on our system with two versions running. The only drawback of installing a 5.2 client is that your current Vantage icons may change. If you follow the Epicor instructions of adding the v:\vantage\vantage.exe path in front of your v:\vantage\vantage.vtg in the target line of your Vantage 5.1 startup icon, then this will prevent the Epic52 splash screen from showing when your users start up vantage 5.1.
To convert Crystal report, you can do this by setting up ODBC on a machine and have the 5.2 database running. With the newer Progress ODBC built in, you have the ability to run ODBC for 5.1 and 5.2 on the same machine, which is a nice feature.
Same with RB reports, you can convert them once you have 5.2 up and running.

About the only thing I can think of that you would have to wait until AFTER running the actualy conversion, is to repoint your Custom Report Links to the live server. Also, we found that several workstations that had previously had the client installed on them had to be re-installed AFTER the conversion because of an error (that I can't remember now).

Having said all that, there have been a number of users on the list report that during testing everything went smoothly everytime they ran through a test conversion. But sure enough, when doing the live conversion there were glitches. Doing the conversion while support is available is a big plus.

Subject: [Vantage] V5.1 to V5.2 <Upgrade Question>

I will be migrating to V5.2 in the next 1-2 months.
I will be installing V5.2 on the same server that has V5.1

How much V5.2 installation can I do in advance?
I assume I can install the progress directory and the
vantage program libraries.

As for clients, I've found that installing V5.1 & V5.2
on the same client causes a performance hit.

thanks in advance

You can install the vantage software in advance and do a test conversion on
the live server. (preferably on the weekend, after having done a test
conversion on a separate box).

On actual upgrade day, since the software has already been installed, shut
progress 9.1C down in the windows services, change the service startup type
to Disabled, do an offline backup of the 5.1 database and restore it to the
5.2 directory, just as you did in your initial test conversion.

Start up progress 9.1D, log into 5.2 to run conversions, and you should be
good to go.
