(V8) - Custom Crystal reports and ODBC

No, the BAQ creation utility in 8.03 isn't any better than in was in Vantage
8. I'll agree it's horrid. You can now tie a BAQ/Dashboard to a Crystal
Report now. We've setup a few dashboards that pull from multiple BAQs to
get a more complicated type query than a single BAQ could really do.

Even Access has a better query building tool than Vantage 8.xx does.

Thanks,

Randy

Is BAQ 8.03 that different from 8.00? In 8.00, BAQ is hardly a
substitute for a real query tool. Without the ability to query a query,
the BAQ is only good for simple reports. I'm still using Access for the
heavy layered data crunching. Add in forms for user input and VBA for
evaluation and control, and you have a whole world of possibility.

Joe- since you are on 8.03 and all vantage tables are open via the BAQ
thereby circumventing the need for ODBC, could you not deploy the same
report this via a dashboard report to your users.

Joe,

Each client will need to have the ODBC drivers and a DSN that matches the
configuration of your development system in order to run the report.

I use a connection string for all my Crystal reports, but I still need
to have a configured DSN on my system as the DSN is the first
declaration within the string.

I haven't been able to get it to work without it.

Is there a technical document that shows how to do this? We
currently have our machines set up using ODBC.

Hi Gary,

I tried this out but ran into two issues.

One was that I was trying to create a Crystal version of the Method
Master and as such I needed to join a many to one join to another many
to one relationship. This was not really a show stopper but more of an
inconvience.

Second, I could not find a way to filter on Part Rev. This was a show
stopper and forced me to resort to ODBC.

If you know of a way around the second issue, I would more than be glad
to use a BAQ!

Thanks,

Joe Rojas

I have gotten connection strings to work, and want to go that way.
However part of the purpose of the string is to name the port. So
my conclusion was that I need to maintain two complete sets of
reports, one for the production database and one for the pilot
database. Otherwise, it seems that every time you print a report
from pilot, the report would grab data from production. Is that
correct?

That's correct, you will need two separate reports and if you export
your live into pilot you will need to update the report path in menu
maintenance.

I use an Access update query to update the path locations because I have
about 90 reports.
