As a new member of this group and also a new user of Vantage 8.0 -
since 1-1-2006 - the discussions concerning both the performance of
Vantage 8.0 and Epicor's support of the product are of critical
importance to our company. After reading literally hundreds of
postings regarding Vantage 8.0 it would appear there is general
consensus that Vantage 8.0 is causing at least some users significant
problems and that performance needs improvement. Having worked
closely with Epicor the last two years (and almost daily since going
live) I thought it might be worth sharing some overall impressions.
1) Epicor has and continues to work with us on a daily basis to try
and address our concerns. The "squeeky wheel" so to speak does get
attention, so if you have problems - work the system. They seem
committed to making Vantage 8.0 their flagship product and are making
progress.
2) Use your Customer account manager - often they can be very helpful
on expediting the resolution of issues sent to the Call Center.
3) Test new patches carefully prior to using - they are making major
changes that affect lots of areas and some bugs can leak through. The
sooner they get feedback on these the quicker they are addressed.
User testing is the ultimate quality check.
4) Don't be afraid to escalate your problem up the food chain -Epicor
is a large company - has lots of Customers - visibility is key. Make
yourself visible.
5) Try to work with them as a partner - yes they are driven to get
new Customer's and new revenue, but they don't want to lose their
base.
I can also assure you the Epicor looks at this Web site and reacts to
postings - that can be a good thing if the feed back is kept
constructive.
My thoughts for whatever they are worth.
My experience/opinions are nearly identical to jrlabore's. We, too, went live on 1/1/2006. We began our implementation in earnest on 9/1/2005 (search/selection process started in Feb 2005, Epicor chosen end of July 2005.) Since last September, there have been massive improvements to the V8 product. It is substantially more mature, now -- My stock comment on this is "We're not bleeding edge, but we're on the far, far leading edge."

We had seen a spate of regression bugs with patches around the turn of the year. These gross QA lapses seem to be largely absent from the more recent patch releases (although, clearly, there are niggling little regression errors that do crop up -- Nothing on the scale of what we had observed on and around our go live date...)

My number one concern and the most significant risk factor we have with our V8 implementation is performance. We will want to scale to thousands of daily transactions and many, many tens of thousands of customers, etc. It'd be nice to use some of the native Vantage capabilities to do this vs. rolling our own and posting the inventory and financial impacts in the aggregate. Architecturally, much would seem to need to be done to ensure that Vantage 8 is ready for that type of scale. It does appear, though, that when the developers look to a specific program/widget and attempt to optimize performance, there does seem to be a substantial amount of common-sensical practices/methods to improve the user experience. The poster child for this, in my mind, are the improvements to Part Tracker (and, more recently, the Count Entry screens/program, etc.)

Given my concerns and the risk-factors we've identified, my greatest *fear* is, is that the Open Edge/.NET/Database technologies just are not up to these kinds of scales/performance requirements. I am not enough of a hard core technologist to know if these are unattainable goals given the toolset. We're SQL (vs. Progress) -- I know SQL can scale, just don't know if the application environment and methods can.

Thank you JOHN and Masked Stranger (not ID'd at the bottom)

When the moderators approve a new member we alway hope that they will be
a talker and not a lurker. It's the talkers here that make the list what it
is. Epicor has several dozens of members on this list, common sense says
that if for no other reason they can get a sense of temperment of their
customer base. It isn't always easy to turn the Queen Mary. For those of
you who generally don't post, please start.
If you're shy, be assured, one of the things the moderators on this list
WILL tromp on is the disparaging of other list members.
