Vantage manufacturing environment poll

Mike,
We have gone to work cells in our mfg facility; we have grouped machines
that can simply work together reducing the amount of labor need over doing
each step individually. For example we might bend tubing, debur, clean, and
weld on a bracket. This cell might be done with two workers where before we
would have done each a separate step using four employees. The employees
clock into a single work center. The person performing the last step in the
cell is the only person-taking piece counts. We have our standard setup for
the throughput of the cell and reflect a crew size accordingly.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me, I can get our cost
accountant on the phone with us and we could provide more details.

Hi Dick,

Perhaps I should not have used the word poll. I've discovered what I feel
is a
very serious (at least in 3 of our 6 divisions) costing issue related to
this
type of workcenter/environment.

My question was meant to first see if there were other users who had this
type
of environment. If there were only one or two, I would take the issue
offline.
However, if there are a significant number of users who have this type of
environment I had hoped to use this forum to discuss the issue and
brainstorm
potential work arounds.

My apologies to the group if I have not followed protocol.

Mike,
with all due respect, wouldn't a better place to put this "just
curious" stuff be on the polls area in the yahoogroups page? There are 755
users in this group, and if everyone responded to your post, we
would be overwhelmed with messages. The polls area is designed for this
kind of
activity. I'm not trying to offend anyone, but it makes sense to me.
Let me know if you think I'm off base.
Thanks,

Mike,
I don't necessarily speak for all of the moderators, but I think you handled
it just fine. Polls (as they are available on our Yahoo page) require a
moderator to setup and monitor the responses, and speaking from experience,
only a handful of people ever respond to these kinds of questions. Asking
for responses from interested members seems like the best route to me.
Good luck on finding a solution to your concerns!

Mike,

We are OK with Vantage in our shop except in Pack-out (assembly and
pack-out). We have had to change things around in order to get things
scheduled correctly. In that department we end up putting the crew size
as the number of machines while keeping the crew size 1. We end up
tricking the rate per hour in order to keep the quoting and estimated
labor hours correct. We all need solutions to these problems.

In our manufacturing areas we started with each machine as a work
center. Now that we also have cells as work centers that have a number
of machines in each cell, it makes things difficult in this area as
well. We end up with cells as work centers and yet some jobs only
needing individual machines. I don't know if this is what you were
getting at, but we would be also pleased to talk off line.

Steve
