Because of all the reading and writing involved in the database conversions,
tech support said a machine with 2 harddrives does the conversions the
fastest.

Jim,
In addition to what Thad said, you'll need at least Windows NT 4.0 or
better. W2K Pro or XP Pro will work as well.
On the install, you would just install Progress and Vantage on the PC just
as you would on a server -- including Progress Explorer. Then, when you go
to install the Client, skip the "Progress" portion of the client install and
just install the Vantage portion.
You can easily run Vantage on a Standalone PC with 400mhz, as Thad
suggested -- even on a laptop. But when you start to do Database
Conversions and Schema Changes, prepare to sit around for awhile --
especially when converting from 4.0 to 5.0. It could easily take 10 - 15
hours. Going from 5.0 to 5.1 or 5.1 to 5.2 doesn't take nearly as long
(under 1 hour, depending on your PC).

Any machine will do, though for best results I'd recommend at least 400mhz
processor and 256 megs of ram. A laptop's hard drive will slow you way
down, so I'd recommend getting a desktop.

We are still on 3.00 and want to start testing some of the features in
4.0,
5.1 and 5.2. Is it possible to set up vantage on a pc buy itself not
running
off the server to test. If so any minimum requirements as far as processor
or memory or operating system. Any input would be great.
Thanks,
Jim
