5.2 Conversion

I agree with everyone else, do everything on a test server first. Let me
mention one more thing to consider. If your live server is running raid 5
where you have several drives mirroring each other, then that will run
slower than on a test machine with less cpu speed. When crunch time came
for us going to 5.0 from 4.0 I ended up starting both data conversions at
the same time. One on my test machine (my notebook) and one on my server.
I ended up aborting the server since my test machine finished first. I
found out from tech support that the cpu speed didn't have as much to do
with it as the speed of the harddrive. They said the best conversion
machine is one with 2 harddrives. One to read from and one to write to.
Let me mention one more thing; Tech support is super with these conversions.
With that in mind try to convert for real on a weekend they're working.

I would do my converting on the "old" server and start fresh with 5.2 on the
new one. 5.2 is stable so far with us, but using it only a few weeks. Some
of the screens look allot different also.

do I need to install 4.0, 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2 on the new server to convert?
(I know this was covered before)

Second question - how many people are running 5.2? Is it stable? We

We are testing 5.2 now before using it totally, and everything seems to

If you are running any WIN98 boxes as clients
You have to make the HELP File directory Read only
If yo do not, the WIN 98 boxes will not be able to open the help file

Just what I have found so far

BIG Changes in the navigation and how you get into things
ALot different

Dina,
Just to make sure I answer your question clearly, I'll say it two ways. You DO need to install 4.0, 5.0, 5.1, and 5.2 somewhere, but not necessarily on your new server. Upgrading Vantage is much different than upgrading, say, Microsoft Office. Most office products will install over any previous version of the software. Vantage, however, not only installs the new files for that version (in their own new directory), but then the database itself must be changed and reshaped to fit the new version. That's the part that takes so much time. It's called "Schema Changes", and "Database conversions".

You already have 4.0 installed now. So you could, for instance, install 5.0 and 5.1 and 5.2 on a test computer. Then you could copy your database (using Procopy or using Probkup/Prorest) to your test computer and do the 5.0 and 5.1 and 5.2 conversions on the test computer. I have a laptop test computer, so I could theoretically copy the database to my laptop on Friday evening. Bring it home and do the conversion you're speaking of at home. Then on Sunday afternoon (if my laptop is fast enough), bring the converted (to 5.2) database back to work and copy it to the new server. This would keep your new server nice and clean -- with only the 5.2 install on it.

You certainly could also install all of the the Vantage versions on your new server and do the complete conversion on that computer. Likely, it would be fastest to do it there because usually your server is the fastest computer on the block.

I believe you must convert to all releases sequentially. A lot safer that
way. I installed 4.0 on our test server and did them in order. Maybe it
was my knowing better where things were but the live conversion had none of
the same issues as the test conversion (but a few new ones too). We've been
on 5.2 all week and have some issues but pretty much it is very stable. Big
hint: run through it on a test server and have end users preview the
changes. Get them involved early.
Issues:
- Still can't get CR 8.5 Report Distribution to work
- Quotes missing qty and price on all lines after line 1 (CR issue) - Epicor
working on it
- Some users had crpe32.dll not found errors until I copied all of
vantage\dll to their vntgwk52 folder
- A couple people have hugely slow response time in Job Tracker pulling up
jobs (30-45 sec.) - all others zippy fast
- Part/BOM modification cumbersome with checkout process in Engineering
Workbench - learning curve issue

But these will pass and the benefits we are seeing already far outweigh a
little startup aggrevation.

We are also planning going to 5.2 in the next week. We purchased a new
server, that we planning putting 5.2 on. We are currently running 4.0 -
do I need to install 4.0, 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2 on the new server to convert?
(I know this was covered before)

Second question - how many people are running 5.2? Is it stable? We
are not using ODBC right now.

Thanks,

Dina

We are testing 5.2 now before using it totally, and everything seems to
be going well. I did a clean install on a new 2000 server to keep from
having the progress conflicts on the same server. Both can be put on
the same server, but to make it work seems like a "band aid" fix. i did
not get a "warm & fuzzy" feeling after talking with Epicor's tech
support.
Good Luck, mine went smooth, hope yours does too!

P.S. to the group, great to be back. We are finally getting more into
custom reports and your messages help allot.

We are upgrading to 5.2 this weekend after our server migration to
Windows 2000. Are you using ODBC link in some applications? If yes, what
is the performance? Does it crash constantly or does it seem to be
stable? We are running
5.0 on Windows 2000 server and it is a nightmare. I hope by moving to
progress 9.1.d instead of 9.1.a and installing the latest version of
ODBC will solved these issues. Any comments or suggestions will be
appreciated. P.S We have made a lot
of test using this configuration and it seem to provide very good
results in stability and speed.

We have 5.1 on a NT server. I just installed 5.2 on a Windows 2000
server with no problems, were using Windows 2000pro and XPpro on our
desktops. Running both concurrently on the same desktop, no problems so
far.

We're planning our conversion to 5.2. Are there any differences or
nuances
using Windows NT 4.0 vs Windows 2000? Any inherent problems with
either?

I would do my converting on the "old" server and start fresh with 5.2 on the new one. 5.2 is stable so far with us, but using it only a few weeks. Some of the screens look allot different also.
