We migrated to SQL Server and was there for 6 months. We went back to
Progress in March of this year. We have one of the fastest networks and
servers possible and it was still allot slower then Progress. We eventually
got the speed to an acceptable level. Our problem was with data corruption.
It seemed like almost every time we applied a patch it would corrupt
something. We are still dealing with problems that was caused by the time
spent on SQL Server. When we made the change back in March, I was told that
there was no other SQL Server users left. I also was frustrated when
calling Tech support. When I mentioned that I was on SQL Server, I often
imagined the Tech support person with the "deer in the headlights" look
about them. One way I got by allot of the speed issues was to run as many
users as possible on Terminal Services from the Vantage server. Although
you should normally not run server applications such as SQL Server on a
Terminal server, this was one of the few things I could do that made a huge
difference.
A few other things that where problems.
1) Priority dispatch report that takes 30 sec on Progress takes 30-45
minutes on SQL Server
2) Global Finite Scheduling took over 24 hours to run.
3) Installation and upgrade instructions where obviously untested.
Hope you have better luck then we did. I have a Priority Dispatch report
written in MS Access 2000 that runs on SQL Server much faster then the
Vantage report if you would like a copy of it. I believe I still have a
copy of all of our custom reports written in Access if you would like them
let me know.
If you have any questions, feel free to give me a call.

Subject: [Vantage] Vantage on Microsoft SQL Server
Hi all,
Is anyone out there using the version of Vantage that runs on Microsoft
SQL? We are thinking of moving to it. I would like to hear about any
problems or performance issues from anyone using it. I would also like
to hear about the Progress to SQL conversion process.
Thanks
Chris
