Vantage - Server Configuration for 6.1

Jim,
Let me Third...Epicor/Progress does not support the use Raid 5! Go with
Raid 10. It's much faster and more fault tolerant.
Straight from the mouth of one who lost a Raid 5 with Vantage on it not a
month or so ago due to 2 drive failure.
It looks like you have the 4 drives needed anyway, though I might look at
the drives suggested by the others for additional speed also.
Good luck.

Hello,

We are looking to upgrade our server to the following:

- Intel Dual-Core Xeon Processor 2.8 GHz

- 4 Gig Memory

- Raid-5 SCSI with 4 146GB Seagate Cheetah 10K.7 hot-swap drives

- Windows-2003

- CD/RW

Are there any glitches in this configuration?

Yep, RAID 5 is not the preferred config. You may want to reconfigure for
RAID 10.

Michael

Jim,

I have basically the same config here, but with Raid - 10. Progress doesn't
like Raid - 5.....

I had always been a Raid 5 fan and loved it, but now I'm liking the Raid 10
It's much faster

Do yourself a favor and add two more hard drives and go with Raid
10......you can loose two drives and keep processing.

Jim,

In my research I've discovered Intel has three series of Dual Core Xeon
processors (3000,5000,7000). There are different levels within each series.
As an example, a lower clock speed 5100 level processor will have better
performance than a higher clock speed 5000 level processor. Clock speed is a
not true indication of performance even within the same processor family.

I know there are various opinions of RAID Level, but Epicor discourages RAID
5. SAS drives (serial attached SCSI) will give better performance over
parallel SCSI when you have 2 or more drives. A single SAS drive has 300M
controller connection versus 320M for parallel SCSI. Adding a second SAS
drive expands the connection throughput to 600M. I think each connection get
its own channel versus the shared parallel SCSI bus. What I've read this
throughput continues to expand with each drive added up to a max. of 3G.

If running Windows 2003 Standard you are at the max usable memory at 4GB. If
you may need to add memory in the future I would use Windows 2003
Enterprise.
