Classes for programming Vantage

I agree 110% with Vic, your site, and if you can get Dan I highly
recommend him. That's who got me started, and I had zero programming
background.

I wouldn't bother sending your staff to Epicor classrooms. Even though
you are fairly close to the MSP office, IMHO you'd be better off
bringing them to YOU.

To get the most bang for your buck engage an Epicor consultant/trainer
to come to your site and train on your data in your environment with
real customers, Part Numbers and vendors. If Tim Shoemaker is still
with Epicor, request him. Tim is very competent with BAQ's, Crystal,
BPMs (and maybe customizations). Dan Pringle is one of the best with
customizations. Bring them to you. And you can take the "train the
trainer" approach by having a key person in your staff learn from them.
Don't engage an Epicor Consultant calling it "training" otherwise the
cost is increased. Tell them you desire onsite assistance with your
"key guy" to help with BAQs, Crystal, etc. And when they get onsite,
respectfully ask that another couple of your staff shadow the training.

Or hire an independent consultant to do the same.

Typical Vantage classes taught by Epicor instructors are "101" level on
their perfectly honed training database and you're making widgets for
Dalton Company. When you staff return to the office there's a learning
curve all over again.

I used to teach some classes when they were in dire need of an
instructor and I totally stepped outside the official training guide.
Some of the instructors are first-rate. Most are not. That's why
they're not in the field. Most when prompted with difficult questions
with real-world scenarios post that question on a Vantage email list
similar to this one (only for Epicor employees).

My 2 cents.......

Vic

Along with an assortment of Crystal reports classes, I'm looking to get
more training for our IT staff with Visual Basic scripting and possibly
.NET to help with customization and personalization of Vantage. Any
other insite on which classes and/or what to avoid would be very
helpful.

Thank you,

If you plan on moving to Epicor 9 someday and want your customizations to
work in the Web-Based interface, I would recommend learning C# instead of
VB. Having an understanding of ADO.Net is also extremely helpful. IIS
administration is not a bad idea if you're going to get into web services,
hosted help, SharePoint, etc.
