Vantage vs CMS/400

Don't discount CMS/400 so quickly.

They are on my short list of possible companies to replace Vantage.

There is more to these guys then you might think.

Any one had experienced with CMS/400? How comparing to Vantage?

I need your opinions.

Thank you,
The last company I worked for used CMS AS/400 (about 4 years ago).
At the time it was a DOS based program...need I say more? They may
have updated to a Windows version, but to be honest, I haven't
checked.

Yes, it is character mode. I want to know
the capabilities of the two system comparing.

Thanks,

One thing I learned a long time ago, through using four systems in different environments, is that no matter what some one else has experienced with it from a functionality standpoint (reliability is another issue) there is no substitute for mapping your particular requirements and comparing them yourself. Every business is a little different.

I took at quick look at the CMS web site (having never heard of them) and see that they do have a graphical interface...but...it looks a lot like a system I used to have for turning AS/400 DOS type characger screens into a Windowsy look and feel. An outfit in Seattle called WRQ has (or had) a product called Reflection that was a Windows terminal emulator for As/400 and they had some reformatting capabilities to allow Windows functions. The screen shots from CMS look a lot like that. Character layout pretending to be Windows.

Having come to Vantage from DCD-Classic on AS/400 the difference is night and day. Not the least of which is compatibility with other Windows programs like Office or Access - not to mention Crystal Reports. AS/400 (now iSystems) are rock solid but take a good look at administrative overhead. They are very complicated for even simple tasks - even with a GUI overlay. Not that Windows servers are easy but there is much more help available for free.

Finally compare Vantage 8.0 integration and customization capabilities and see if the same is available in CMS.

Right now to me anything involving a character based interface (with GUI overlay or not) would look like a big step backwards no matter what the internal functionality had. Just my 2 cents.
