VBI - Vantage Business Intelligence

We use a raid 5 as well, it has not been supported from 5.2, some say it
is slower. That is the only thing I know.

I was browsing EPICWeb when I came across the Vantage 8 system
requirements page.
I was reading about the server requirements to see how our server stacks
up against the requirements when I found this line: 10,000 RPM SCSI
Drives (2-6 Drives with RAID 1 or 10 RAID 5 configurations are not
supported with Vantage.)

Is that for real?!? RAID 5 is not supported? What does that mean? I have
my server setup with RAID 5 and the installer that came here didn't say
anything about it!
Does anyone here use RAID 5 on the server? Anyone know the impact of
using RAID 5?

We are running 6.1 ... does anyone use VBI? I have seen portions of VBI and looks pretty slick ... but with any new tool, appears to be big learning curve ... is it worth it? Have you found it useful?

If not VBI, then what? We are into needing to develop some major reports on Project Profitability and the task appears to be daunting..

any feedback would be helpful.

What I have seen with VBI I like. What I saw at the CorVu class I took I REALLY liked (very powerful for development). The canned reports in 6.1 are much better than earlier releases....all that said the rest of my experience with VBI has been checkered at best. Largely self inflicted but worth noting.

1. Our Vantage DB was on Windows NT when we got VBI. It would not run the scheduled data set builds. So (with Epicor help) I put it on our, then, one Win2K Server and connected to the Vantage DB via, agan at that time, 100MB network. Still had login issues where the update would not run. Eventually that got fixed.

2. Once it could update I found I had too little disk space. It takes at least as much space as the vantage DB and maybe more. To be comfortable allow at least 2X the mfgsys.db. I tried adding a USB drive to that server (the SCSI disks on it were too small and bloated from Exchange stores) but then could not figure out how to make all the right settings to put the data there. Performace might have been ugly anyway.

3. I am to the point now of completely starting over and am tired of our President needling me about not getting VBI working. But the setup and config side is not real easy and the documentation is lacking. I think there is an assumption a consultant will set it up.

I think it's a great reporting tool but, like many others including Crystal, what you get out of it will depend a lot on what you put into it as far as learning curve. There will defnitely be a time cost for that side of it. I really want it to be a major part of our V8 reporting scheme with RB going away.

We've had VBI for a couple of years, but never really learned how to use it.
Now that we upgraded to 6.1, I hope to find time to dedicate to it, but it
does seem like a very daunting learning curve. Install is a NIGHTMARE. Our
6.1 install is not yet working properly, and it took me over a year to get
it up and running on 5.2. Good luck if you go with it, but it seems to be
VERY powerful, so probably worth it if you have the time!
