Ver 5.0 server configuration

We have a 3.8 Gig database, divided into 14 extents of 256 meg each.
The 15th extent is dynamic. I have a dual channel RAID controller, with
2-9Gig drives mirrored on channel A, and 7-9Gig drives on the channel B
using RAID 0/1 (or RAID 10). I also have a single 9Gig drive with which
I use for swap file for Windows 2000 ONLY.
On channel A, I have Windows 2000 OS, and the BI file. On channel B, I
have the 15 Vantage extents.

Anyone shed some light on physical location of Vantage, DB and Bi files on a

same drive dedicated to ONLY Vantage and Progress is the best way to go.
Make sure that it is on it's own server on a different drive from the OS.
You should have a good amount of memory .5 to 1 gig. Follow the recommended
instructions from epicor and you should be fine. Also how you set up your
network is a major part in the set up. There are no substitutes for good
error correcting switches vs... the low budget hubs and switches, there are
BIG differences between them. Also look at putting two cards in your server
connecting them directly to your main switch, this, with good software to
maintain your network will give you a very fast system.
There are other ways to set this up, some cost more than others, and it will
make a difference between a 3 to 5 second log-in and a 20 to 30 second
log-in.

HI,

You talk about putting two cards in the server.
Will this work with hubs as well as with switches?
If one has a 192.168.51.11 address what address should the other card be?
The same or different? How will this help?

Hi,

I would not connect them to a hub from the server only a switch. Hubs will
not provide the same performance as a smart switch. Look at Bay Networks or
Cisco (just to name a few of the better ones).
Two cards in your sever will "load balance" the traffic on your server
increasing the speed. I know that Compaq servers come standard with the
software and sometimes two cards for load balancing. It is not necessary to
do this, one card is fine, but for the cost of the card and the performance
increase it is well worth it.
Load balancing software will properly set up the two cards in the server and
will pass the traffic equally between them. The IP addresses should stay
the same on the server and the software will do the rest!
I would call the hardware vendor that you purchased the server from and
discuss this option with them to see if you would benefit from this on your
network.

Keith,
The ability to split database into multiple volumes/extents and move the BI
file to a different drive has been available since at least Progress v. 8
and Vantage v. 3; we had to do it because of some special circumstances in
our implementation. I'm told that moving the BI to a different drive
(especially one with a separate drive controller) should improve response
time although we didn't see a significant difference when we changed our
configuration.
