Win2K Hardware Halt

Thanks, That's 2 votes for keyboard. Since that is simple to try Occam's Razor is telling me to swap in a different keyboard and see if the behavior shapes up. Also, Don Madox in off-list conversation had me check for User.dmp file and there is none (related to this anyway) so it appears whatever happens is happening so fast there is no chance for OS to dump. My seconday suspicion then is a memory fault severe enough to affect BIOS and halt the machine. My PC is identical to the one in question so if I swap memory with it and the problem moves that might be a smoking gun too.

Todd,

I had similar error. Tried everything then realized it was giving a
keyboard error on bootup. I changed the keyboard and it worked fine. It
was out in the shop, where it must have picked up some cutting fluid from
the CNC.

Sort of OT except that user is running Vantage....
In a relatively new (6 mo) Win2K machine about 6 times a day user is getting
a blue screen message -
"Hardware Error Encountered - Call System Administrator" (or something very
similar)
- and that's it. No details. It just instantly flashes to blue screen and
halts on that message. On boot up it passes POST OK. I have never seen
this blue screen or error message ever before.

Only difference lately has been swapping of the keyboard. I'm running a
virus scan (in addition to the regular real time scanning) just in case.
Next step will be opening case and re-seating all the cards and memory in
case thermal "flex" after it is warm is the cause.

Any other suggestions? Any recommendations on a fairly cheap hardware
diagnostic program?

Thanks,

Todd,

Have the crashes provided BSOD's? If so, you might consider looking in the
file called, "user.dmp." This file should contain crash-state information
that may provide a direction to look for potential problems. I won't dare
call them "Hardware Conflicts." That just sounds too much like MyCrow$oft
language.

No, there was no "normal" BSOD or any indication of the OS being involved. Just "flash" straight to the described screen and no way to get out of it. Almost seems like something pretending to be a BSOD or perhaps the BIOS jumping in and halting things. Bery strange - as I said, never seen anything like it before.

Todd,
I had an occasion at home where hubby bought a "GOOD DEAL"
wireless mouse and keyboard. Totally, fried the operating system just
plugging it in. So keyboard change is not completely far fetched.

Except keyboard was from another Win2K machine that had been in use for a long time. This is a new employee who is a pretty big guy (physically) and wanted something more substantial than the $1.79 keyboards I usually buy. Something with larger keys and more "substance". Then again maybe another swap to see if problem goes away would be in order, just to rule that out.
