Rick,
Don't be surprised to find this problem can't be replicated. I have found
on several occasions around here that printers are plugged into a different
receptacle or power strip. This tends to open up the possibility for a
faulty ground wire (in the outlet or the computer or the printer or...) to
cause a small electrical current to run through the shielding in the printer
cable. Some newer, less older power supplies are susceptible to this. The
outlet does not even have to be different if the problem is in the printer's
ground, but I have seen this be a problem. In fact, I blew a rather unusual
fuse in our laser welder by allowing the metal shield on the cable attached
to the computer touch the shield on the welder. (Spent a few stressed and
frantic moments trying to find a replacement for that).
Anyway, the point to this long-winded response...Next time you see an
electrical around, have him check for a faulty ground.

If anybody is interested in an update on this problem, I removed the Okidata
8Z printer and all its associated software and drivers. Since then the
machine has not even hiccupped, so that must have been the cause of the
problem. To replace the Oki I got a Laserjet 1200 in hopes that a "more
standard" printer would work out better. We'll see next week as that user
is out of town right now.
