Windows Server 2012

Right... Insite...

Most people put Insite on a different server. Most of the time I see it in
combination with APM, Service Connect, EPM, and other 3rd parties like that.

We just found out that Insite requires 32-bit Progress. Does anyone use
Insite and 64-bit Epicor? What setup do you have to manage this?

I'm rather confused after searching on this group as to whether it's being used successfully or not. If you're having trouble, what are you doing or going to do? Should we buy and install the server 2008 software instead? Or is 2012 working for you (after all I've been testing Epicor 9 on Windows 2003 servers which aren't supported either!)? We plan on going live on Epicor 9.05.702a (or the most current tested version available); we're 32-bit Progress. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

We're moving from Vantage 8.03.409A. I've become an "expert" with the DUU! I'm now running the conversions on a Windows 2008 server, but I had run them on an old Windows 2003 server to start with.

Sue:

We formally started our Epicor 9 upgrade project about a month ago - we're currently on 8.03.410. After we received our new server with 2012 Server (Epicor included 2012 server on their quote - but we didn't purchase it from them), Epicor informed us that 2012 wouldn't work and that we'd need a downgradable version (Windows 2008 R2). It was a bit frustrating that they couldn't get the server OS right - I mean, that should be one of the slam-dunks, yes???

Anyway, we received our new server and installed Windows 2008 R2; Epicor 9.05 was installed today - everything looks fine thus far....

Stick to Windows 2008 or 2008 R2.

Running a newer piece of software on an older OS is easier than running an
older piece of software on a newer OS.

Your headaches will be a lot less if you do that.

Also, you should go to the 64-bit version of 9.05 when you go live, not the
32-bit version.

Just my two cents worth here. I began building a test environment with Server 2012. Just because I could. I got to the starting the appserver stage in the installation and couldn't get them to start. Ended up blowing it all away and and using 2008 r2. Ran into exactly the same issue. Then realized I had not started the db server. After I did that it worked. So I am now pondering what would have happened if I had done that on the 2012 install. Unfortunately I was doing it on a physical machine and not a VM.

I don't advocate going against the vendors recommendations, but it is always good to give things a go, just for the sake of it (spins propeller cap) :)

Stick with 2008 R2.

Thanks for the input...we decided it's best to look at 2008R2 rather than 2012. I'm searching the group on the 32-bit vs 64-bit topic to see if I should re-think that also. Thanks again, I really appreciate the group's advice!

What would be the advantage of 64-bit vs. 32-bit? Is the preferred path when converting to 64-bit still to convert to 32-bit and then do the 905 32-bit to 64-bit conversion last?

Personally, I prefer the 32-bit for the following reasons.

No need for the extra 32-bit Admin for 64-bit.
Automatically limits a user to 2gb of Epicor.
Easier install for OpenEdge Architect (wasn't supported on 64-bit, not sure now)
SQL is still 64-bit so the backups are faster.
Have no idea of any advantage for 64-bit Epicor. Perhaps others do.

With the smart caching and indexing nowadays, most of the database is dead history and never makes it to memory.

You can run the admin tools on 64-bit as of 9.05.606. Just run Epicor9client.exe on the 64-bit server. See answer book #13656MPS.

As far as I know the conversions still had to be on a 32-bit box going from 8.03.x to 9.05. My last conversion from 9.05.607 to 9.05.701 I ran on a 64-bit box.

Just a follow up on this.

OpenEdge 10.2A on Windows 2012 Server is not certified to work correctly
http://knowledgebase.progress.com/articles/Article/000035228

However
SQL 2012 as a database only is supported
Hence your database server can be server 2012 and SQL 2012 which is great for Always on availability
http://knowledgebase.progress.com/articles/Article/000026864

But you AppServers need to be on Windows 2008R2 64Bit and using the SQL native client 10 drivers.

RE 64bit vs 32Bit. You should be 64 bit.
Re Unicode vs non-unicode you should be Unicode.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the input...we decided it's best to look at 2008R2 rather than 2012. I'm searching the group on the 32-bit vs 64-bit topic to see if I should re-think that also. Thanks again, I really appreciate the group's advice!

We have clients running 2012 and it works great. You will need to adjust the security to behave like 2008 R2 - What's all the hoopla about?

I've seen Progress environments work on Server 2012 but not SQL installs. The main app servers won't start. Seems to be some sort of issue with the schema holders.

If there's a trick to get that working, I'm sure others would be interested in it as well.

No need for the extra 32-bit Admin for 64-bit. - Not needed with the
exception of an initial installation, and only for the first initial
conversion. Also, this doesn't need to be a dedicated server, you can
overlay it on pretty much any server.
Automatically limits a user to 2gb of Epicor. - Not sure I even understand
this, there is no user limit, the only limit is the potential amount of RAM
that can be used by a single process.
Easier install for OpenEdge Architect (wasn't supported on 64-bit, not sure
now) SQL is still 64-bit so the backups are faster. - most people don't use
this or have a need for it.
Have no idea of any advantage for 64-bit Epicor. Perhaps others do.

Advantage, you can put more of your DB into memory, which will reduce the
need for disk reads. You can also expand the size of your buffers and stack
with more RAM usage available.

There is no specific advantage or real reason for sticking to 32-bit in my
opinion.

No need for the extra 32-bit Admin for 64-bit.
Automatically limits a user to 2gb of Epicor.
Easier install for OpenEdge Architect (wasn't supported on 64-bit, not sure
now) SQL is still 64-bit so the backups are faster.
Have no idea of any advantage for 64-bit Epicor. Perhaps others do.

With the smart caching and indexing nowadays, most of the database is dead
history and never makes it to memory.

What would be the advantage of 64-bit vs. 32-bit? Is the preferred path when
converting to 64-bit still to convert to 32-bit and then do the 905 32-bit
to 64-bit conversion last?

We just found out that Insite requires 32-bit Progress. Does anyone use
Insite and 64-bit Epicor? What setup do you have to manage this?
