5.1 install

Anyone venture a guess on what the difference between a major release and a
.1 minor release is?

Mark,

Our upgrade from 4.0 to 5.0 took a LONG time as well. But I don't believe
the move to 5.1 will be so 'intensive'. Being that it's '5.1' instead of
'6.0' leads me to believe that this 'release' is just that - a release
rather than a whole new version.
Very few menu items have changed in 5.1 from what I've looked at. A few new
screens, a few new features, a few new modules (if you buy them).

Hey Troy, is your machine using a RAID array? I found the last
upgrade from 4 to 5 to be very painfull. My server is RAID5 and the
upgrade took over 16 hours. I am hesitant to go to 5.1 for this
reason.

Just did it yesterday and today on my laptop. Progress and Vantage take just a few minutes to install. Schema Changes took about 3 hrs. On first login, Database Conversions took under 10 minutes. (PIII, 800Mhz, 256MB Ram).

Running 5.0 and 5.1 on the same machine means either: 1. You use procontrol for each, or
2. You move 5.0 onto Progress 9.1C's version of Progress Explorer tool, or 3. Use procontrol for 5.0 and Progress Explorer tool for 5.1.

I used method 2 above, which didn't take too long to configure. I haven't really dug into testing the new database yet. One BIG plus for testing, you can have ODBC installed for both 5.0 AND 5.1 on the same machine (I'm told).

Hi
I never upgrade the vantage system myself. Can you give steps ,how to
upgrade from one version to others,What are the precautions we se
should take.how can we test it weather it is working ok or not and
then if not ok go back to old system.

I will really appreciate that.
The instructions are too long for an email. Here is the link to the instructions (26 pages) on how to install Vantage 5.1. It includes instructions for keeping 5.0 working while installing 5.1.
