Anyone venture a guess on what the difference between a major release and a
.1 minor release is?

Mark,
Our upgrade from 4.0 to 5.0 took a LONG time as well. But I don't believe
the move to 5.1 will be so 'intensive'. Being that it's '5.1' instead of
'6.0' leads me to believe that this 'release' is just that - a release
rather than a whole new version.
Very few menu items have changed in 5.1 from what I've looked at. A few new
screens, a few new features, a few new modules (if you buy them).

Hey Troy, is your machine using a RAID array? I found the last
upgrade from 4 to 5 to be very painfull. My server is RAID5 and the
upgrade took over 16 hours. I am hesitant to go to 5.1 for this
reason.

haven't really dug into testing the new database yet. One BIG plus
for testing, you can have ODBC installed for both 5.0 AND 5.1 on the
same machine (I'm told).
